Chapter 12 - THE EMPIRE BUILT ON A LIE

Antonio did not deny killing my grandfather.
We confronted him that same week.
“He would have killed Salvatore.”
Antonio’s voice was tired.
“Francesco believed Salvatore was weak.”
“Why?”
“He wanted out.”
That surprised me.
My biological father had once wanted to leave the Moretti world completely.
Antonio continued.
“Francesco told him there were only two ways out. Death or exile without a cent.”
“So you killed your father?”
“No.”
Antonio looked at Catherine.
“She did.”
Naomi’s mother closed her eyes.
Another twist.
Another burden.
Catherine explained.
Francesco Moretti discovered she had witnessed one of his murders.
He planned to kill her.
Salvatore tried to stop him.
Francesco pulled a gun.
Catherine fired first.
Antonio arrived seconds later.
He covered it up.
From that moment, the three were bound together.
Sofia helped Catherine enter witness protection.
Salvatore was forced away from parts of the family.
Antonio inherited the empire.
“And everything after that grew out of one lie,” I said.
“Yes.”
Antonio looked at me.
“I thought controlling everything would keep the family safe.”
“And?”
“It destroyed it.”
That was perhaps the first useful lesson he ever gave me.
Federal prosecutors reopened old records.
Catherine gave a protected statement.
Because the case involved self-defense and evidence of Francesco’s planned attack, she was not prosecuted.
Antonio, however, faced charges connected to years of obstruction and financial crimes.
He accepted them.
No running.
No fake death.
Finally.
I began dismantling parts of the organization that had survived only because everyone was afraid to be the first person to stop.
Legitimate companies stayed.
Extortion operations ended.
Smuggling routes closed.
Some captains left.
Some threatened me.
I let them.
Naomi watched carefully.
“You’re changing everything.”
“I have a daughter now.”
“You had morals before.”
“Debatable.”
She almost smiled.
The custody case disappeared.
Lily’s trust became untouchable until adulthood.
Salvatore pleaded guilty to financial crimes and conspiracy.
Daniel returned publicly from the dead, which created paperwork I found hilarious only because it wasn’t mine.
For the first time, the future seemed almost quiet.
Then Marco entered my office.
“Boss.”
“What?”
“We found something in Antonio’s archived records.”
A marriage certificate.
Naomi Ellis.
Matteo Moretti.
I stared.
“That’s fake.”
“It’s legally filed.”
Naomi looked at me.
“When?”
“Five years ago.”
The date was one week after she disappeared.
Our signatures were present.
Forged.
Someone had legally married us without either of us knowing.
But that wasn’t the shocking part.
Attached to the filing was a prenuptial amendment.
If a child was born from the marriage, that child automatically inherited controlling rights over the oldest Moretti family trust.

Lily didn’t own twenty percent.
She potentially owned fifty-one.
