Chapter 6 - THE FATHER WHO LEFT A SECOND WILL

:

I thought my father was dead.

Charles claimed otherwise.

I wanted to believe he was lying.

Marcus found the first piece of evidence the next morning.

A financial transfer.

My father's old account.

Active.

Recent.

The destination:

A private legal trust in Oregon.

We flew there.

The trustee met us in a small office.

He was an elderly man named Samuel Reed.

He looked at Amelia.

Then me.

“He knew you'd come.”

“Who?”

“Your father.”

I stared.

“Is he alive?”

Samuel shook his head.

“No.”

Relief and disappointment collided.

“Then why is the account active?”

“Because he left instructions.”

Samuel opened a file.

A videotape.

My father's face appeared.

Older.

Tired.

But alive in the recording.

“Daniel.”

I couldn't breathe.

“If you're watching this, the Langford plan has reached its final stage.”

He explained everything.

He had known Charles was corrupt.

He had discovered the planned attack on my mother.

He had built his own financial system to protect me.

But he made one mistake.

He trusted Amelia.

Not blindly.

He trusted her because she had secretly helped him gather evidence.

My father had known she was trapped.

That was why he agreed to the marriage.

He believed we could eventually expose the Langfords together.

I looked at Amelia.

She covered her face.

My father continued.

“Daniel, if you ever lose everything, look at what remains.”

A pause.

“Trust the person who gave you the evidence, not the person who gave you the wealth.”

The recording ended.

I stared at Amelia.

She was crying.

“I never told you.”

“No.”

“I was afraid.”

“I know.”

Then Samuel handed me a second document.

A will.

My father's final will.

It named me executor.

And Amelia co-beneficiary.

The Langford assets would transfer to us jointly if Charles were convicted.

I laughed softly.

“He planned for everything.”

Samuel nodded.

“He loved you.”

I looked at Amelia.

She was staring at the will.

“He loved you too,” I said.

She cried harder.

Then my phone rang.

Detective Harper.

“Daniel.”

“Yes?”

“We found Charles.”

“Where?”

“Seattle.”

I froze.

My childhood city.

“The contractor?”

“Arrested.”

“Charles?”

“Fled.”

“Where is Amelia's mother?”

Silence.

“She's missing.”

My stomach tightened.

“Charles took her.”

The chase began.

We found Charles at a private marina.

He was preparing to leave the country.

Amelia stood beside me.

He saw her.

“You betrayed me.”

She shook her head.

“I finally stopped obeying you.”

Charles laughed.

“You think Daniel will love you after what you did?”

I looked at him.

“She doesn't need me to forget.”

I turned to Amelia.

“She needs me to know the truth.”

Charles tried to flee.

Federal agents stopped him.

He looked at me.

“You have no idea what you're inheriting.”

I answered:

“Neither do you.”

He was arrested.

For the first time in my life, Charles Langford had no audience.

No influence.

No control.

Just a pair of handcuffs.

Amelia's mother was recovered safely.

The financial investigation began.

And the Langford empire finally entered the light.
