Chapter 11 - The Room Behind My Study

My father loved secret rooms.

Not because he was sentimental.

Because he trusted walls more than people.

Nicholas’s list led us to the east side of my study.

I had worked in that room every day for six years.

Yet behind one walnut panel, Brendan found a mechanical lock I had never noticed.

The code was my mother’s birthday.

Inside was a narrow room.

No windows.

No furniture.

Only filing cabinets.

My father had preserved everything.

Cash ledgers.

Photographs.

Audio recordings.

Lists of payments.

Enough material to rewrite twenty years of Moretti history.

Then Tessa found a folder labeled NICHOLAS.

Inside were surveillance photographs of my brother.

Tessa.

Their courthouse wedding.

Her first prenatal appointment.

My father knew about the baby.

I felt sick.

“He knew Eli existed.”

Tessa stared at the photographs.

“And still ordered the attack.”

A document beneath them was even worse.

It contained contingency instructions.

If Nicholas died, Tessa and the child were to be monitored but left unharmed unless she contacted me.

Then a later note appeared in Graham’s handwriting.

BENJAMIN DECEASED. CONTINUE VINCENT PHASE.

My father had started the plan.

Graham continued it after his death.

“What was Vincent Phase?” Tessa asked.

We found the answer in another folder.

Medical information.

My blood pressure history.

Prescription schedules.

My travel habits.

A draft estate plan Graham had repeatedly encouraged me to sign.

Under that proposed plan, if I died without children, control of several Moretti companies would pass into a management trust.

Trustee:

Graham Keane.

It had never been about revenge.

Graham had spent years waiting to inherit control of my empire.

Tessa had unknowingly ruined his timetable.

Every refill she arranged.

Every medication bottle she checked.

Every lamp she moved.

She had kept me alive long enough to expose him.

Then Brendan found a small red light blinking beneath one filing cabinet.

A live transmitter.

He looked at me.

“Vincent.”

“What?”

“If that light is active…”

May you like

He pulled the device free.

“…Graham knows we found the room.”
