Chapter 9 - The Cornered Predators

The aftermath of the grand gala raid sent shockwaves through the national financial and legal communities.

Within twelve hours of Garrett and Evelyn Daley’s public arrest, Callahan Global Equity formally filed for judicial foreclosure on all properties, hotels, and luxury resorts registered under the Daley Hotel Group. Federal regulators froze thirty-four offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, recovering $28 million in stolen investor capital.

The Daley estate in River Oaks—the twelve-acre mansion where Evelyn had sprayed chemicals into my eyes—was placed under a federal seizure warrant.

Three weeks after the gala, I stood in the master parlor of the Daley estate, accompanying my father’s asset-liquidation team. The sun was shining through the high windows, illuminating the spot near the unpacked suitcases where I had collapsed in agony on the morning after my wedding.

The pristine white rug that Garrett had been so eager to protect was gone, replaced by bare hardwood floors.

My mother walked into the room, wearing a tailored charcoal suit, carrying a thick legal update file under her arm.

"The federal bail hearing concluded twenty minutes ago," Patricia reported, taking a seat on the window bench.

"Did they get bail?" I asked, looking out at the rose garden.

"Denied," Patricia answered smoothly, a sharp, satisfied smile touching her lips. "Judge Mercer ruled that both Garrett and Evelyn present an extreme flight risk and an ongoing danger to society. They will remain in maximum-security federal custody at the county correctional facility until their criminal trial begins in May."

"And Garrett’s legal defense team?"

"All three of his private attorneys withdrew from the case this morning," Patricia revealed. "Once Callahan Global Equity frozen their corporate retainer accounts, Garrett couldn't afford their hourly rates. He is currently being represented by a court-appointed public defender."

I let out a long, quiet breath.

It was staggering how fast an illusion of immense wealth and untouchable power could crumble when stripped of its stolen capital. Garrett and Evelyn Daley had spent decades terrorizing people, hiding behind high-priced lawyers, political favors, and social status. But when faced with the absolute, unyielding power of the Callahan family, their grand empire had turned out to be nothing more than a house of cards built over a swamp.

My father walked into the parlor, holding a set of legal architectural blueprints.

"Chloe," Arthur said warmly, wrapping his arm around my shoulders. "The auction for this property concluded an hour ago. Callahan Global Equity acquired the entire twelve-acre estate for $12 million."

I looked at my father, surprised. "You bought the estate, Dad?"

"I bought it for you, sweetheart," Arthur said gently. "And we are demoing this entire house on Monday morning."

He unrolled the architectural blueprints across the marble fireplace mantel.

"In its place," Arthur explained, "the Callahan Foundation is constructing the Clara Miller & Chloe Callahan Medical Center for Domestic Trauma—a state-of-the-art facility providing free reconstructive surgery, ophthalmic care, legal defense, and long-term housing for women escaping domestic violence."

Tears welling in my eyes, I looked at the blueprints. Where the grand mansion stood, the plans showed a beautiful, light-filled glass structure surrounded by oak trees, blooming gardens, and healing fountains.

"It’s perfect, Dad," I whispered, pulling my father into a tight, emotional hug. "It’s absolutely perfect."

"They thought they could blind you, Chloe," my mother said, stepping up beside us and taking my hand. "Instead, they gave you the clarity to save thousands of other women."
