Chapter 10 - THE BROTHERS FACED EACH OTHER

Dante did not go alone.
He simply needed Matteo to believe he did.
At 8:04 p.m., Dante walked into Saint Vincent Hospital wearing no wire anyone could detect.
Federal tactical teams surrounded the building.
I remained in a command vehicle two blocks away.
I hated every second.
The pregnancy had become real in a new way that week.
Not visible.
Not yet.
But every decision now passed through the knowledge that two children were inside me.
I could not afford recklessness.
Neither could Dante.
Inside the hospital, Matteo waited in an old surgical theater.
Vittorio sat tied to a chair.
My father beside him.
Sofia’s mother was in another room.
Dante stopped ten feet from his brother.
“You wanted me.”
Matteo laughed.
“You knew.”
“About your birth? No.”
“Dad did.”
Dante looked at Vittorio.
“I know.”
Vittorio lowered his head.
Matteo held Lucia’s copied letter.
“Thirty-seven years. He knew.”
“I’m not defending him.”
“You always defend him.”
“Not anymore.”
That seemed to confuse Matteo.
Dante continued.
“You were robbed.”
Vittorio looked up sharply.
“Dante.”
“Be quiet.”
I had never heard Dante speak to his father that way.
“You were lied to,” Dante told Matteo. “Your inheritance was hidden. Your name was erased. You deserve the shares Lucia documented.”
Matteo’s eyes flickered.
“But you do not deserve Lena.”
His expression hardened.
“She controls what belongs to me.”
“No. Documents control it.”
“You married into it.”
“She didn’t know.”
Matteo laughed.
“Neither did you, apparently. Brilliant marriage.”
Dante accepted the insult.
Then Matteo asked:
“Did you love her?”
Dante’s face changed.
“Yes.”
“Then why Sofia?”
I stopped breathing in the command vehicle.
Dante answered without knowing I could hear him.
“Because I was arrogant.”
Silence.
“I liked being wanted by someone who didn’t ask anything difficult from me. Lena knew me too well. She saw every failure. Sofia looked at the version of me I wanted to believe.”
My eyes burned.
“I let myself enjoy that.”
Matteo stared.
“You threw away a wife because another woman admired you?”
“Yes.”
No excuse.
No minimized seconds.
Just yes.
Then Dante added:
“And if Lena never forgives me, that will still be mine to live with.”
Something broke inside me.
Not enough to repair us.
But enough to let truth in.
Then Vittorio shouted.
“Behind you!”
A gunshot exploded.
The command feed shook.
I screamed Dante’s name.
Tactical teams moved.
Inside, Matteo fell.
But Dante had not shot him.
Vittorio had freed one hand and grabbed a hidden weapon taped beneath his chair.
Matteo clutched his shoulder.
Dante kicked the gun away.
Agents stormed in.
My father was freed.
Sofia’s mother was found alive.
Matteo survived.
Vittorio was arrested.
And as agents placed cuffs around his wrists, he looked at Dante and said:
“I did everything for this family.”
Dante answered quietly:
“That was always the problem.”
Then federal agents revealed one final discovery.
Vittorio had not merely hidden Matteo’s inheritance.
For five years, he had secretly been moving money through an account opened in my name.
May you like
More than two hundred million dollars.
And someone had withdrawn it the morning I left Dante.
