Chapter 8 - LORRAINE'S PRIVATE LEDGER

The search of Mercer Construction records produced a black notebook.

Not because police raided anything dramatically.

The company’s restructuring advisers requested internal financial documents.

Daniel cooperated.

Mostly.

The notebook belonged to Lorraine.

Every page contained numbers.

Family payments.

Loans.

Promises.

People.

Next to my name:

ELENA — STRONG CASH FLOW.

Then:

EVENTS CO. VALUE 3.5–4.2M.

House equity 600k+.

Liquid investments est. 1.1M.

I felt violated in a way the forged signature had not accomplished.

They had not looked at me as a person joining a family.

They had inventoried me.

Then I found another line.

AFTER WEDDING TARGET: 600K INITIAL.

Not $850,000.

Six hundred.

The failed wire attempt had been larger than even the original plan.

Lorraine had panicked after the wedding collapsed.

She tried to take enough money to save herself before I locked the door.

Naomi turned the page.

HARTWELL PAYMENT — 475K DUE JAN.

MHC CAPITAL — 300K.

DANIEL PAYROLL RESERVE — 125K.

Lorraine had already assigned my money destinations in her head.

Then one line stopped us.

E — IF REFUSES, D HAS LEVERAGE.

“What leverage?”

Nobody knew.

Daniel claimed he didn’t.

I believed nothing automatically anymore.

Grant remembered an argument two months earlier.

Lorraine told Daniel:

“You know what Elena did at Preston.”

I became still.

Preston Global.

My former employer.

The corporation where I worked in compliance.

Seven years.

“What did she mean?”

Grant shrugged.

I knew.

Six years earlier, I had investigated a procurement executive for undisclosed vendor relationships.

The company terminated him.

He later sued.

The case settled confidentially.

I had done nothing wrong.

But my name appeared in internal documents.

If selectively leaked, the story could become:

Elena Carter destroys another business.

Elena Carter targets executives.

Elena Carter has a history of accusations.

A smear package.

Naomi searched Lorraine’s files.

There it was.

Old articles.

Court filings.

My LinkedIn history.

Photographs.

Lorraine had prepared a narrative in case I resisted.

Not criminal leverage.

Reputational.

If I refused to save Mercer Construction, she could paint me as vindictive.

If I ended the wedding, even better.

Angry bride destroys groom’s business after family argument.

Exactly the story she started posting online.

I stared at the file.

Rachel said:

“This woman planned your reaction before you had it.”

Naomi nodded.

“That is why boring public statements matter.”

Then Lucas found payments to a private investigator.

$18,000.

The investigator had looked into me.

Naomi.

My mother.

Even Anna.

My closest financial gatekeepers.

The family knew Anna controlled dual authorization.

That explained something.

Lorraine had tried to convince me to fire Anna twice.

She called her “territorial.”

“She is not family,” Lorraine once said.

I thought she was being nosy.

She was trying to remove the second signature protecting my company.

My phone rang.

Anna.

“Elena.”

Her voice sounded wrong.

“What?”

“The bank found another attempted transaction.”

My stomach tightened.

“How much?”

“Not Elena Events.”

“Then what?”

“My personal account?”

“No.”

She paused.

“Your events escrow account.”

That account held deposits belonging to clients.

Wedding money.

Corporate-event retainers.

Money that was not mine to spend.

My pulse exploded.

“How much?”

“Three hundred twenty thousand.”

“Did it go through?”

“No.”

Relief.

“Where was it going?”

Anna told me.

MHC Development.

Lorraine’s replacement company.

Then:

“The attempt happened Friday.”

The day before my wedding.

Before the public fight.

May you like

Before she could claim panic.

Lorraine had been trying to take client money before I ever refused the tray.
