Chapter 8 - THE MAN BEHIND THE FOUNDATION

Arthur didn't deny it.
He simply sat down.
“I knew this day would come.”
The detective pointed his weapon.
“Hands where I can see them.”
Arthur obeyed.
I stared at him.
“You knew my father.”
“Yes.”
“You worked with him.”
“Yes.”
“You betrayed him.”
Arthur sighed.
“Yes.”
“Did you order his death?”
“No.”
“Did you know it would happen?”
He looked at me.
“Yes.”
My heart broke.
“You knew.”
“I knew they intended to frighten him.”
“And you let it happen.”
“I thought I could control them.”
“You couldn't.”
“No.”
Noah stepped forward.
“Where is my father?”
Arthur looked at him.
“Arizona.”
My son froze.
“Is he safe?”
“He has been hiding under another name.”
“Why?”
“Because the people behind the foundation wanted him dead.”
“And you?”
Arthur lowered his head.
“I wanted him alive.”
“That doesn't excuse anything.”
“No.”
The detective arrested him.
But before he was taken away, Arthur said something that changed the case.
“The person who ordered the final operation wasn't me.”
I stared.
“Who?”
He looked at Bennett.
The principal's face collapsed.
“Don't.”
Arthur smiled bitterly.
“Tell them.”
Bennett said nothing.
Arthur continued.
“Your mother.”
I felt the world stop.
“My mother?”
“No.”
The detective looked at me.
“Lena, your mother died when you were ten.”
Arthur nodded.
“She did.”
“Then what are you saying?”
“She wasn't the mastermind.”
I stared.
“Who was?”
Arthur looked at Noah.
“Your grandmother.”
My grandmother had died when I was fifteen.
I remembered her as gentle.
Quiet.
She baked pies.
She knitted blankets.
She had always held my hand when my parents argued.
“You're lying.”
“No.”
“Why would she do this?”
“She wasn't trying to hurt students.”
“Then what?”
“She built the foundation to expose corruption.”
I froze.
Arthur explained.
My grandmother had originally created the system to track illegal discrimination against vulnerable families.
But after her death, the foundation's leadership changed.
The database was exploited.
My father discovered it.
Daniel tried to expose it.
Arthur became trapped.
Bennett became corrupt.
And the entire operation spiraled beyond its original purpose.
“Then why did my father tell me to fear you?”
Arthur looked at me.
“Because I was the one who gave him the evidence.”
He paused.
“And I was also the one who betrayed him.”
Noah asked:
“Where is the safety deposit box?”
The detective answered.
“Tomorrow morning.”
“No.”
Noah looked at me.
“Tonight.”
The box contained the final evidence.
Bank transfers.
Original contracts.
Names.
But there was one document that mattered most.
A letter from my grandmother.
Lena,
If you are reading this, the people you trusted may have rewritten your family history.
Do not believe anyone who tells you your father abandoned you.
He left because he was protecting you.
And if Noah ever asks why he was born into this fight, tell him the truth:
He was never a target.
He was the reason your father kept fighting.
I cried.
Noah took my hand.
For the first time that night, he wasn't standing on a stage alone.
He had me.
Then the detective received another call.
He listened.
His face changed.
“Daniel Reed has been located.”
My heart stopped.
“Where?”
“Phoenix.”
“Is he alive?”
“Yes.”
“Is he coming here?”
The detective looked at Noah.
“He's already on a plane.”
My son sat down.
After seventeen years, the father who had vanished was finally coming home.

But we didn't know whether the reunion would bring healing.
Or another betrayal.
