Chapter 11 - THIS TIME I WALKED INTO THEIR WORLD

Leo expected Maeve to stay behind.
He did not order it.
Good.
He said:
“We have people handling this.”
Maeve answered:
“Daniel helped my mother because he recognized her from my desk.”
“I know.”
“He is in this because of me.”
“No.”
“Don’t do that.”
“What?”
“Take responsibility away from me because you think it protects me.”
Leo went quiet.
Then nodded.
“What do you want to do?”
That was why she trusted him.
Not because he was powerful.
Because he learned.
They worked with police.
Vale’s security network led to an abandoned event warehouse near the river.
Daniel was there.
Alive.
Bruised.
Terrified.
Arthur Vale was not.
He had already fled.
But Vincent Rossi remained.
Leo’s uncle.
The man who had profited beside Caroline.
The man who helped hide Elizabeth.
When police surrounded the warehouse, Vincent tried to negotiate through Leo.
“Family.”
Leo almost laughed.
Maeve heard the call.
Vincent said:
“You don’t give your uncle to police.”
Leo answered:
“You gave my father to a doctor who drugged him.”
Silence.
Then:
“Antonio was weak.”
Maeve saw Leo change.
His hand tightened.
Then relaxed.
He looked at her.
Not for permission.
For grounding.
Leo told Vincent:
“Come out.”
Vincent surrendered.
Daniel was recovered.
At the hospital, Maeve sat beside him.
“You saved my mother.”
He looked embarrassed.
“She was scared.”
“So were you.”
He shrugged.
“I knew you would’ve helped her.”
That sentence broke Maeve in a different way.
People watched what she did.
Kindness had traveled.
From a warehouse.
To a delivery route.
To a stranger.
Back to her mother.
She squeezed Daniel’s hand.
Then investigators announced Arthur Vale had been detained at O’Hare.
Private jet.
Switzerland.
Too late.
He carried four passports and nearly $600,000 in cash.
The case became public within hours.
Chicago exploded.
Vale charities.
Vale hotels.
Bellweather.
Sullivan Floral.
Rossi businesses.
Everything under investigation.
Caroline’s social feeds went silent.
Richard resigned.
Martin Shaw cooperated.
Dr. Lawson was arrested.
And Leo faced his own choice.
Some Rossi companies had received Bellweather money.
Even if Leo had not known, the funds remained.
His attorneys advised quiet settlements.
Leo refused.
He announced an independent audit.
Returned tainted profits.
Opened records to investigators.
Carlo, an old Rossi lieutenant, warned:
“You’ll make us look weak.”
Leo said:
“No.”
“I’ll make us look accountable.”
Maeve heard about it later.
It mattered.
Then Sofia called.
The ownership review was complete.
Maeve’s total rightful stake in Sullivan Floral was not forty-seven and a half percent.
Not even close.
Elizabeth’s estate plan contained a clause triggered by Richard’s fraud.
His thirty-five percent transferred away from him upon proven breach of fiduciary duty.
Half to Caroline.
Half to Maeve.
That gave each sister:
Thirty-five percent.
The remaining thirty percent?
The old Rossi stake transferred to Maeve eleven years earlier.
Meaning Maeve owned sixty-five percent of Sullivan Floral.
May you like
She had been the controlling owner for more than a decade.
While everyone treated her like an employee they could dismiss.
