Chapter 11 - MY MOTHER HAD RUN THE FAMILY AFTER MY FATHER DIED

My mother, Isabella Bellacort, lived in Florence.
She painted.
Collected antique books.
Called me every Sunday.
She was seventy-two.
And according to Thomas, she had once controlled the most violent part of my father’s world.
I thought he was lying.
Then Marco found the records.
My mother’s maiden name appeared behind shell companies I had spent years shutting down without ever knowing who originally controlled them.
Thomas laughed when he saw my face.
“You thought Vincent was the dangerous one.”
“Why would she kill him?”
“She didn’t want him testifying.”
Cassie watched me carefully.
The test I had imposed on Vanessa suddenly felt childish.
I had spent my life believing I understood deception.
I had not even understood my parents.
I called my mother.
She answered immediately.
“Adrian.”
“Did you order Dad killed?”
Silence.
No denial.
That hurt more than anything Thomas had said.
Finally:
“Where are you?”
“Answer me.”
She sighed.
“No.”
I closed my eyes.
“Did you know Martin Doyle poisoned him?”
“Yes.”
“Before?”
“No.”
Thomas shouted from across the room.
“Liar.”
My mother heard him.
“Thomas is with you?”
“Yes.”
Her voice changed.
“Leave.”
“Why?”
“Because he has never understood what happened.”
Then she told me the truth—or another version of it.
Vincent had decided to expose everyone.
Thomas.
Martin.
Insurance executives.
And Isabella’s own laundering network.
She had agreed.
She wanted out too.
But Martin panicked.
He believed exposure meant prison.
So he poisoned Vincent without orders.
Thomas discovered it afterward and helped conceal the evidence to protect himself.
Isabella covered up the murder because revealing it would expose Adrian, then twenty-eight, to the family’s enemies.
“You protected me by letting Dad’s killer disappear?”
“I protected you badly.”
That answer sounded too honest to dismiss.
Thomas screamed,
“She is lying!”
Then gunfire exploded outside.
Federal agents moved.
Thomas dove behind a wall.
Marco pulled Cassie down.
I covered her instinctively.
She shoved my shoulder.
“Get down yourself.”
Fair.
The shooting lasted seconds.
One attacker was captured.
Another escaped.
The captured man had an Italian passport.
Former security contractor.
Employed years earlier by Isabella Bellacort.
I stared at my phone.
My mother was still connected.
“Mom?”
She whispered,
“Adrian, I did not send them.”
Then a male voice sounded behind her.
Italian.
Close.
My mother gasped.
The call ended.
Marco immediately traced it.
Florence.
Her home.
Security cameras went offline.
My mother had been taken.
Thomas stood slowly.
For the first time, he looked genuinely frightened.
“Martin had a son.”
Cassie stared.
“My cousin?”
Thomas nodded.
“Gabriel Doyle.”
Walter had never mentioned him.
Gabriel had grown up believing both Bellacort families destroyed his father.
He had spent years inside private security.
And according to Thomas, Gabriel wanted more than revenge.
He believed the Bellacort medical empire had been built from deaths his family helped cause.
He had kidnapped Isabella.

And his next target was Bellacort’s main vaccine storage center.
A facility holding medicine for more than two hundred hospitals.
