Chapter 11 - MY FATHER'S LAST CONFESSION

The word confession terrified me.
For seventeen years, I'd believed my father was an innocent translator killed for refusing to cooperate with criminals.
Now I was learning he might have been hiding something himself.
Detective Brooks arranged for Matteo Moretti to provide a recorded statement.
I met him the following morning.
He was fifty-two.
His dark hair had turned silver.
There were deep lines around his eyes.
But I recognized the smile from the photograph hidden inside my necklace box.
He stood when I entered.
"Natalya."
His voice broke.
I couldn't speak.
Matteo slowly approached.
"You look like Viktor."
Tears filled my eyes.
"Please tell me what happened."
He nodded.
We sat across from each other.
For a long moment, he stared at his hands.
Then he began.
"Your father helped me uncover financial transfers connected to several criminal organizations."
I swallowed.
"He was translating records?"
"Yes."
"But he also did something else."
My stomach tightened.
"What?"
"He agreed to move money through a legitimate account so we could document where it went."
I stared.
"He moved criminal money?"
Matteo nodded.
"Under the direction of a cooperating investigator, we believed we were preserving evidence."
Detective Brooks leaned forward.
"Do you have documentation of that cooperation?"
Matteo nodded.
He provided copies of communications with a federal investigator who had since retired.
The records would need verification.
But the possibility changed everything.
My father hadn't simply translated the evidence.
He'd actively helped collect it.
"Why didn't he tell us?" I whispered.
"Because he feared retaliation."
I looked down.
"He died anyway."
Matteo closed his eyes.
"I know."
Then he began crying.
"Natalya, your father saved my life."
I looked up.
"How?"
"The night everything collapsed, Henderson's men came for us."
My heart pounded.
"Where?"
"At a warehouse near the docks."
Matteo's voice trembled.
"Viktor distracted them so I could escape with the evidence."
I covered my mouth.
"He knew what might happen."
"Yes."
Tears streamed down my face.
For years, I'd imagined my father had been frightened and alone.
Now I understood he'd made a terrible choice.
He'd risked himself to protect someone else.
Matteo continued.
"Before we separated, he gave me a final message."
I stared.
"What message?"
"He said the forty-seventh poem would explain what he'd done."
My heart pounded.
"And what did he do?"
Matteo looked toward Detective Brooks.
"He copied the entire financial archive."
I frowned.
"Where?"
"Into a concealed digital storage device."
My hand moved toward the pendant.
Matteo noticed.
Then smiled sadly.
"Your father always said you'd keep the snowflake safe."
I began crying.
"He gave it to me before he died."
Matteo nodded.
"He knew."
For a long moment, nobody spoke.
Then Detective Brooks asked the question I was afraid to ask.
"What's in the forty-seventh poem?"
Matteo took a breath.
"A confession that Viktor deliberately misled the criminal network about where the money had gone."
I stared.
"He stole it?"
Matteo shook his head.
"He diverted the funds into a protected account under the supervision of an investigator."
My heart stopped.
"Why?"
"To keep the criminals from recovering it while the investigation developed."
I looked toward Detective Brooks.
"Was that legal?"
"We'll need to verify the account and the claimed authorization."
I nodded.
The truth mattered.
Even when it was complicated.
Then Matteo handed me a sealed envelope.
"Viktor wanted you to have this when you were old enough."
My hands shook.
Inside was a letter.
My little star,
If you're reading this, then I wasn't able to come home.
I began sobbing.
Please don't let my choices become a burden you carry forever.
I wanted you to grow up free.
Free from fear.
Free from the men who believe money makes them powerful.
Then I reached the final sentence.
And if anyone ever tells you I died because I betrayed my family, remember this.
I chose to protect you.
I pressed the letter against my chest.
For a moment, I couldn't breathe.
Then Matteo said something that changed everything.
"Natalya, the money your father protected wasn't meant for criminal organizations."
I looked up.
"Then who was it for?"
May you like
He swallowed.
"The families harmed by the very people we're trying to expose."
