Chapter 9 - Unmasking the Monsters

The audio recording echoed through the marble foyer like a death knell.

“He’s the perfect fall guy... When the federal auditors come, Lucas goes to prison for fraud, your grandfather goes into the ground, and we take our forty percent cut.”

Pamela covered her ears, weeping in terrified panic. “Turn it off! Turn it off!”

Derek’s face twisted into desperation. He reached into his pocket, pulling out a flash drive. “This is a misunderstanding! I was under duress! Gregory made me do it! Gregory planned the whole embezzlement scheme!”

“You lying snake!” Gregory roared, lunging at Derek and grabbing him by the collar. “It was your idea! You brought the Cayman accounts to my office! You poisoned the old man’s water!”

“Enough!” Detective Miller, the lead state investigator, stepped forward, his heavy boots clicking against the marble as he raised his sidearm. “All four of you! Keep your hands where we can see them!”

Rachel dropped to her knees on the marble floor. The arrogant, cold socialite was gone, replaced by a sobbing, pathetic mess. She crawled toward Lucas, reaching out to grab the hem of his trousers.

“Lucas... please!” she begged, tears streaming through her ruined makeup. “I was confused! Derek tricked me! He gave me drugs! He manipulated me! You’re my husband, Lucas! You promised to protect me in front of God!”

Lucas stepped backward, slipping his boot cleanly out of her reach.

“You didn't want a husband, Rachel,” Lucas said, looking down at her with icy detachment. “You wanted a fall guy. You wanted someone to take the blame for fifteen million dollars while you lived in luxury with your lover.”

“I can change!” Rachel wept, clutching her hands together. “We can start over! We can leave Idaho! I’ll give you everything! Just don't let them take me to prison!”

Attorney Vance stepped forward, pulling a thick stack of federal indictments from his briefcase.

“Rachel Lawson,” Vance read aloud, his voice echoing with absolute authority. “You are under federal indictment for Attempted First-Degree Murder, Wire Fraud, Money Laundering, Conspiracy to Commit Bank Fraud, and Felony Elder Abuse.”

Vance turned to Gregory.

“Gregory Lawson,” Vance continued. “You are under federal indictment for Attempted First-Degree Murder, Corporate Embezzlement, and effective immediately, the Idaho State Police have reopened the 2009 homicide investigation into the death of Thomas Lawson based on newly recovered physical evidence and wiretap admissions.”

Gregory collapsed against the wall, sliding down onto the floor like a sack of stones. His eyes stared blankly into space, completely broken.

“And Derek Vance,” Attorney Vance finished, looking at the sweating financial advisor. “You are under federal indictment for Interstate Wire Fraud, Identity Theft, Securities Fraud, and illegal administration of a controlled substance.”

Four SWAT officers stepped forward from the side hallways, heavy steel handcuffs clicking open.

Derek tried to turn and run toward the back patio doors, but two officers tackled him instantly to the floor, forcing his arms behind his back with sharp, mechanical efficiency.

“LUCAS!” Rachel screamed as an officer pulled her up from the floor, clicking the cold steel cuffs onto her wrists. “LUCAS, LOOK AT ME! YOU CAN’T DO THIS TO ME! I’M A LAWSON!”

Walter stepped directly in front of her. He looked into his granddaughter’s eyes for the very last time.

“You are no Lawson,” Walter said softly. “You are a parasite. And today, the infestation ends.”
