Chapter 6 - THE MAN WHO COLLECTED FAMILIES

Raymond had not returned to rebuild a relationship with Sabrina.
He had returned because he studied vulnerable families.
The storage unit contained detailed files.
Victoria’s debts.
Sabrina’s ambition.
My property records.
Logan’s family finances.
Rebecca’s pregnancy.
He collected weaknesses the way other men collected watches.
Investigators discovered that Raymond had used different surnames in three states.
He had been engaged four times.
Two former partners lost homes after signing business documents.
A third woman disappeared.
Her name was Michelle Davis.
She vanished seven years earlier in Nevada.
Raymond told people she stole from him and fled to Mexico.
Her file contained a life insurance policy.
Raymond had collected five hundred thousand dollars after authorities declared her legally dead.
The case was reopened.
Rebecca agreed to testify.
She had recordings of Raymond discussing false identities.
She also surrendered money he transferred to her.
She was not charged with the wedding fraud.
But her relationship with him became evidence.
Victoria moved into a hotel after receiving notice to leave our home.
She called me constantly.
I answered once.
“Glenn, I have nowhere to go.”
“You have savings.”
“Most of it is frozen.”
“Because it contains stolen money.”
“I am still your wife.”
“You ended that when you planned to steal my home.”
“I was manipulated.”
“You were willing to destroy me before you discovered Raymond intended to destroy you.”
She began crying.
I felt sadness.
Not responsibility.
Those feelings had been tangled for years.
Now I understood the difference.
Sabrina moved into a small apartment.
Logan’s family canceled her access to every joint account.
His attorneys argued that no marriage occurred, so she had no rights.
They were correct about the marriage.
They were wrong about the fraud.
Sabrina gave investigators messages showing Logan participated in the loan scheme.
He knew my signature was forged.
He planned to use the wedding to reassure investors while his family moved money.
Logan was arrested.
Richard Hale faced additional charges.
Emily filed for child support and provided records of the payments used to silence her.
The investigation expanded across the dealerships and restaurants.
Employees reported unpaid wages.
Fake loans.
Tax fraud.
The glamorous family Sabrina believed would elevate her had been built on debt and intimidation.
I returned to work three days after the canceled wedding.
Clients expected me to take time off.
I did not want to hide.
I also did not want the scandal to become my entire identity.
I began repairing the torn suit.
Not for court.
Not for revenge.
Because I had spent three months making something with care.
Victoria’s violence did not deserve the final decision about whether it survived.
Each seam remained visible on the inside.
I did not conceal every repair.
A repaired object did not need to pretend it had never been damaged.
While I worked, Sabrina visited.
She sat quietly near the window.
“I want to learn.”
“Learn what?”
“To sew.”
“You hated this place.”
“I hated what it represented.”
“Work?”
“No.”
She looked at her hands.
“The fact that everything I had came from someone I was taught to feel ashamed of.”
I did not answer immediately.
Then I handed her a box of loose buttons.
“Sort these by size.”

It was not forgiveness.
It was a first task.
