Chapter 8 - NOAH’S LAPTOP

I had searched for that laptop after Noah died.

His employer told me he must have taken it home.

I assumed it was lost in the accident.

It wasn’t.

Marco had it.

That did not prove Marco caused Noah’s death.

But it proved something else.

Someone connected to Marco obtained Noah’s property afterward.

The laptop hard drive was damaged but recoverable.

The files mirrored the safe-deposit records.

Invoices.

Vendor statements.

Emails.

Then one audio file.

Noah’s voice.

I almost could not listen.

I did anyway.

He recorded it seven days before he died.

If you’re hearing this, I’m documenting what happened at Meridian.

He named three executives.

Marco.

Dominic.

An external freight broker.

Then:

I do not believe Vincent Castalano authorized this.

I looked toward Vincent across the conference room.

He stared at the floor.

Noah continued:

His name is the threat. That is why the scheme works.

Exactly.

Then Noah described being warned to stop asking questions.

No graphic threat.

Simple sentence:

Think about your wife and baby.

My hands trembled.

That was why he hid everything from me.

Wrong choice.

Understandable fear.

Then:

I’m trying to get directly to Castalano before they realize how much I copied.

The recording ended.

I cried in the restroom for fifteen minutes.

When I returned, Vincent was alone.

Renzo had stepped out.

He said:

“I’m sorry.”

I looked at him.

“For what part?”

“For building a name people could use like a weapon.”

That answer surprised me.

“You didn’t tell Marco to threaten Noah.”

“No.”

“You didn’t know.”

“No.”

“Then don’t take his crime because guilt feels noble.”

Vincent stared.

I continued:

“But don’t pretend the fear around you had nothing to do with why Noah couldn’t safely ask for help.”

His jaw tightened.

“That’s fair.”

He said that often now.

Then he gave me something.

A printed email.

Noah had sent one final message the night he died.

Not to Vincent.

To Renzo.

Subject:

PLEASE GET THIS TO HIM.

Renzo had never seen it.

The email had been intercepted inside security routing.

Dominic again.

Noah wrote:

Marco knows I copied the vendor books.

I am meeting someone tonight who says he can get me inside.

If I don’t make it, Hannah knows nothing.

Leave her out of this.

My husband’s final instinct was to protect me with ignorance.

It almost worked.

Then investigators recovered GPS data from the laptop.

Noah had gone to a warehouse parking lot before the crash.

Marco’s phone had been in the same area.

So had Dominic’s.

No direct proof of what happened there.

But then a witness was found.

A former night guard.

He remembered Noah.

And he remembered an argument.

No violence.

Just Marco telling Noah:

“You should have stayed invisible.”

Then Noah drove away.

Twenty-seven minutes later, he crashed.

The guard said another dark sedan left shortly after him.

Plate unknown.

Driver unknown.

For the first time, the accident did not feel random.

But it still was not proof of murder.

May you like

And Vincent refused to let anyone call it that without evidence.

That restraint mattered more to me than revenge would have.
