Chapter 2 - THE FILES ELENA LEFT BEHIND

Z
Three police cruisers stopped beneath the stone archway outside the Voss mansion.
But the first man through the door wasn't a uniformed officer.
It was Daniel Mercer.
Former federal prosecutor.
Marcus's oldest friend.
And the one person in America who had known Marcus was alive for the previous six weeks.
Daniel took one look at Adrian and said, “Don't touch anything.”
Adrian laughed nervously.
“You can't walk into my father's house and give orders.”
Daniel displayed his identification.
“I can when I'm accompanying detectives investigating suspected kidnapping, fraud, obstruction, and homicide.”
The word homicide changed the room.
Vanessa sank onto a sofa.
Margaret whispered, “Homicide?”
Marcus stared at her.
“Elena.”
Margaret looked away.
That tiny movement was enough.
“You knew something.”
“No.”
“Mom.”
“I said no.”
“You couldn't even look at me.”
Charles slammed his hand onto the desk.
“This is becoming ridiculous.”
Marcus turned toward his father.
“You want ridiculous? I woke up chained to a hospital bed in another country with no identification and no memory of how I got there.”
Everyone stared at him.
Marcus had planned to reveal that story differently.
But after seeing Lily on her knees, planning no longer mattered.
“The last thing I remembered was leaving our Zurich office,” Marcus continued. “I was supposed to meet an auditor who claimed someone inside Voss International was stealing from the pension fund.”
Charles's face remained hard.
“I remember getting into a car.”
Marcus looked at Adrian.
“And then I remember waking up seventeen days later.”
Adrian shook his head.
“This is fantasy.”
“The doctor who treated me is alive.”
Adrian stopped smiling.
Daniel opened a folder.
“Dr. Pavel Novak gave a sworn statement last month.”
Charles stared at Daniel.
Marcus continued.
“The men who brought me to that clinic told the doctor I'd been injured in a boating accident. No passport. No wallet. They paid cash.”
Marcus looked toward Vanessa.
“Do you know who visited the clinic three days later?”
She said nothing.
“You.”
Vanessa's tears returned.
Marcus placed the photograph on the table.
“You stood ten feet away from me.”
“I didn't know what they'd done to you.”
“But you knew I was there.”
“Yes.”
The word came out so quietly that Margaret gasped.
Marcus felt the room tilt.
He had prepared himself for betrayal.
Still, hearing it was different.
“Why didn't you bring me home?”
Vanessa looked toward Adrian.
Marcus followed her gaze.
Adrian exploded.
“Stop looking at me!”
Daniel spoke calmly.
“You should probably stop talking.”
But Adrian couldn't.
That was always his weakness.
“You think Marcus was some innocent victim? He was going to destroy the company.”
“I was going to expose theft.”
“You were going to destroy our name!”
Marcus laughed once.
“So you had me kidnapped?”
“I didn't arrange anything.”
“Who did?”
Adrian closed his mouth.
Marcus turned back to the memory card.
Elena had created folders by date.
He opened the oldest.
Bank transfers appeared.
Large amounts had moved from Voss International pension accounts through a consulting company called Albrecht Advisory.
Then the money traveled through shell corporations.
The final recipient appeared repeatedly.
Northgate Holdings.
Daniel leaned closer.
“That's the company we've been tracing.”
Marcus opened another document.
Northgate Holdings' beneficial owner was hidden behind layers of registrations.
But Elena had found an internal authorization signature.
Charles Voss.
Marcus stared at his father.
Charles didn't move.
“Dad?”
“It means nothing.”
“You authorized twelve million dollars.”
“It was a legitimate investment.”
“In a company owned by whom?”
Charles looked at Adrian.
That was the second mistake.
Marcus immediately understood.
“Adrian owns it.”
No one answered.
Daniel nodded slowly.
“That's what Elena discovered.”
Another file contained messages between Adrian and a man named Viktor Salek.
One message, sent the day before Marcus disappeared, read:
M.V. WILL MEET THE AUDITOR AT 9. HANDLE BOTH.
Another:
NO BODY. NO INVESTIGATION.
Margaret covered her mouth.
Marcus read the words twice.
He felt strangely calm.
“Where's the auditor?”
Daniel answered.
“Dead.”
Marcus looked at him.
“They found his body?”
“Six months after you disappeared. Different country. Different name.”
Adrian moved toward the door.
Two detectives entered.
“Mr. Adrian Voss?”
Adrian stopped.
“You're not arresting me based on some files anybody could have fabricated.”
“We're asking you to remain while we secure the property.”
“That's not an arrest.”
“No.”
Adrian smiled.
“Then I'm leaving.”
Marcus stepped aside.
“Go.”
Everyone looked at him.
Adrian frowned.
Marcus smiled faintly.
“Walk outside.”
Adrian did.
Thirty seconds later, shouting came from the driveway.
Then Adrian was brought back wearing handcuffs.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
Marcus shrugged.
“He had an outstanding warrant in Switzerland.”
Adrian shouted curses as officers removed him.
But Marcus barely heard them.
He was staring at Vanessa.
“Where were you when Elena died?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“At home.”
“This home?”
“Yes.”
“With Lily?”
“Yes.”
“How did Elena die?”
Vanessa looked confused.
“You know how.”
Marcus didn't.
Not really.
When Daniel found him six weeks earlier, Marcus had learned that Elena had died in a car accident fourteen months after his disappearance.
According to police reports, her vehicle had gone through a guardrail during heavy rain.
The investigation concluded she had been driving too fast.
But Elena's video changed everything.
“Tell me what happened.”
Vanessa wiped her face.
“She left after dinner.”
“Why?”
“She said she needed to meet someone.”
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
Marcus opened another file.
There was an audio recording from two days before Elena died.
Elena's voice.
And Vanessa's.
Marcus pressed play.
Vanessa's recorded voice filled the room.
“You need to stop digging.”
Elena answered.
“My husband is alive.”
“You don't know that.”
“Yes, I do.”
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
The recorded argument continued.
Elena said, “Adrian paid the clinic. I have proof.”
Then Vanessa whispered something that made Marcus's blood turn cold.
“If you expose him, Lily loses everything.”
The recording ended.
Vanessa covered her face.
“I was trying to protect her.”
Marcus stared at her.
“By threatening her mother?”
“It wasn't a threat.”
“It sounds exactly like one.”
“She misunderstood.”
“Did she also misunderstand when you visited me in Prague and left me there?”
Vanessa started sobbing.
Marcus felt no sympathy.
Then Mrs. Harper appeared at the doorway.
“Marcus?”
He turned immediately.
“Lily?”
“She wants you.”
Marcus went upstairs.
He found his daughter sitting beneath a blanket in one of the guest bedrooms.
Her teddy bear rested beside her.
Someone had stitched the seam temporarily.
Marcus sat on the bed.
Lily crawled into his lap.
“Are the police taking Uncle Adrian?”
“Yes.”
“Because he hit the painting?”
“No.”
She thought about that.
“Because he lied?”
Marcus hesitated.
“Yes.”
Lily looked at him.
“Grandma says lying makes your heart heavy.”
Marcus nearly laughed at the irony.
Instead, he kissed her forehead.
After a moment, Lily whispered, “Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“Uncle Adrian used to go into Mommy's room.”
Marcus became still.
“When?”
“After Mommy went away.”
“What did he do?”
“He looked for things.”
“What things?”
“I don't know.”
She hugged Teddy.
“That's why Mommy told me never to let anybody have him.”
Marcus stared at the bear.
“Elena told you that?”
Lily nodded.
“The last night I saw her.”
Marcus's chest tightened.
“What else did Mommy say?”
Lily's small face became serious.
“She said if the bad people ever found Teddy, I should remember the blue room.”
“The blue room?”
Lily nodded.
Marcus knew every room in the mansion.
None were blue.
“What blue room?”
Lily pointed toward the family portrait hanging across the bedroom.
Not at the room.
At Marcus's grandfather.
Then she whispered:
“Grandpa's old house.”
Marcus understood.
The abandoned Voss summer estate in Maine.
A house that had been empty for fifteen years.
And somewhere inside it, Elena had hidden something important enough to make her teach a four-year-old child a secret phrase.
Marcus hugged Lily tightly.
Downstairs, police were collecting the first pieces of evidence.
May you like
But Marcus suddenly knew the memory card wasn't Elena's final secret.
It was only the map.
