Chapter 9 - WHY RICHARD PUT HIS OWN CHILDREN IN THE SAME COMPANY

Richard did not deny paternity.
That was the most chilling part.
His attorney advised silence.
Richard ignored him.
“I knew Brandon was my son.”
Adrienne stared at her father across the conference table.
“How long?”
“Since he was born.”
She stood.
“You let me—”
Her voice broke.
She could not finish.
Richard looked older.
“I never expected this.”
“That is not an answer.”
“No.”
Adrienne’s hands shook.
“You hired him.”
“I did not hire him personally.”
“You approved his management track.”
“Yes.”
“You knew we were together?”
Richard closed his eyes.
“When?”
“Four months ago.”
Adrienne stepped backward.
“And you said nothing.”
“I was trying to separate you.”
She laughed in disbelief.
“By helping him get divorced?”
“I thought once Julia was out of the picture, the merger pressure would reveal what Brandon actually wanted.”
That made no moral sense.
But it explained the manipulations.
Richard had been moving people around a board.
Why never tell Brandon who his biological father was?
Because Michael Morgan raised him.
At least socially.
Richard had an affair with Rebecca shortly before she married Michael.
She became pregnant.
Michael knew there was uncertainty.
He chose to raise Brandon anyway.
Did Michael know Richard was likely father?
Yes.
Later confirmed privately.
Then why name Brandon in Morgan succession documents?
Because legal fatherhood mattered.
Michael considered Brandon his son.
He amended the founder claim to include him despite biology.
That changed the 18% again.
Not purely blood-based.
Legal language:
my sons Ethan and Brandon, whether biological or legally acknowledged.
So Brandon could still claim half.
Richard had hidden that too.
Why?
Because he wanted Shaw control.
Then Brandon said:
“You made me think Thomas Bennett stole from Dad.”
Richard corrected:
“Michael.”
Brandon’s face hardened.
“My dad.”
Richard stopped.
Fair.
Then:
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because anger made you useful.”
Silence.
Even his attorney looked away.
There it was.
Richard used biological son against legal son’s allies.
Then Adrienne asked:
“Did you know about the affair before four months ago?”
“No.”
Evidence later supported that.
Good.
He was manipulative.
Not omniscient.
Then Julia—me—asked the question nobody else had.
“Why did you encourage Brandon’s divorce after you knew he and Adrienne were involved?”
Richard stared.
“Because I was trying to stop them without telling them why.”
“How does divorce stop them?”
“It doesn’t.”
Exactly.
His logic had collapsed under secrecy.
He wanted Brandon focused on career.
Adrienne focused on merger.
He thought exposure of corporate conflicts would separate them eventually.
Instead, concealment drove them closer.
Everyone in that room had been damaged by people deciding truth was too dangerous for them.
Then Richard handed over his private files.
Not voluntarily at first.
Board counsel demanded them.
One file:
BENNETT-MORGAN-SHAW RECAPITALIZATION.
Dated eleven years earlier.
After Thomas Bennett died.
After Michael Morgan died.
Richard proposed consolidating all three founder blocks under Shaw management.
Why?
He believed a fragmented ownership structure threatened NorthStar.
Maybe true.
But the method mattered.
He offered Rebecca money to disclaim Brandon’s Morgan rights.
She refused.
He offered Ethan Clarke a settlement.
Ethan refused.
He tried to buy Bennett trust.
Martin blocked him.
Then Toby was born.
New Bennett descendant.
Another complication.
Richard wrote:
Long-term solution requires Bennett household alignment.
My stomach tightened.
Household.
Again.
Did Richard engineer my relationship with Brandon?
No evidence.
Brandon and I met before Toby.
Before Richard knew Bennett minor rights would matter.
But after our marriage?
He noticed opportunity.
Then another document:
JULIA MORGAN - RISK PROFILE.
Created seven years ago.
I stared.
NorthStar had been tracking me for seven years.
Public information.
Employment.
Financial history.
Family.
No illegal surveillance apparent.
Still disturbing.
Reason:
Potential Bennett successor.
Then:
BRANDON MORGAN - potential bridge between Morgan and Bennett interests.
Bridge.
Our marriage had turned into a capitalization strategy in Richard’s files without either of us knowing.
Then Toby appeared.
Potential triple resolution?
Bennett trust through me.
Morgan legal line through Brandon.
Shaw bloodline through Brandon.
Our son Toby carried:
Bennett descendant rights maternally.
Morgan legal-family succession through Brandon.
Shaw biological lineage through Brandon.
One seven-year-old child accidentally connected all three founder families.
Richard had seen it.
That was why Toby terrified him.
Not because of 7.4%.
Because Toby’s existence could become the cleanest legal pathway to consolidate claims outside Richard’s control.
Then Rebecca entered with one final archive from Michael Morgan.
Letter:
If Brandon ever has a child with a Bennett descendant, do not let Richard touch the resulting trust.
Written sixteen years before Toby was born.
Before Brandon met me.
Michael had anticipated the possibility of a future Bennett-Morgan family connection.
Why?
May you like
Because he knew something about Thomas Bennett’s daughters.
And apparently, he had known my name.
