Chapter 2 - THE ACCOUNT MY FATHER FORGOT

Nobody spoke for several seconds.
Dad finally reached for the page.
I pulled it back.
“What is that?” he demanded.
“You tell me.”
He looked furious.
Not guilty.
At least not yet.
“That address hasn’t been mine in years.”
Mom turned toward him.
“Richard?”
“It’s the old office.”
I nodded.
“The office you sold six years ago.”
“Yes.”
“Except the company receiving Daniel’s payment was registered two months before you sold it.”
His face changed.
Very slightly.
Vanessa saw it.
“So you knew about the company?”
“No.”
I watched him carefully.
Dad had spent forty years in commercial real estate.
He was good at being questioned.
He knew how to sound offended before anyone could accuse him.
“Anyone can use an address,” he said. “This proves nothing.”
“Correct.”
I put the transfer record back inside the folder.
“That’s why I haven’t accused you of anything.”
His shoulders relaxed.
Then I added:
“Yet.”
My mother whispered my name like a warning.
“Audrey.”
I turned to her.
“For thirty-four years, you wanted me to become more serious about business.”
I nodded toward the documents.
“Congratulations.”
Vanessa stood abruptly.
“This is insane.”
Her chair almost tipped over.
She grabbed Daniel’s arm.
“Tell them.”
Daniel remained silent.
“Tell them you didn’t send that money.”
He pulled his arm away.
“Not here.”
Her face collapsed.
“What does that mean?”
“Vanessa.”
“What does that mean?”
People at nearby tables were pretending not to listen.
Claire stepped closer to me.
“We can move this inside.”
“No.”
I kept my eyes on Daniel.
“He wanted a public table when he thought I was the joke.”
Daniel glared at me.
Vanessa looked ready to cry.
That surprised me.
My sister weaponized tears when useful, but this was different.
She was scared.
“Were you paid?” she asked him.
“No.”
“Then why won’t you answer?”
Daniel rubbed one hand across his mouth.
“I did consulting work.”
“For who?”
He said nothing.
I answered for him.
“A shell company called Northlight Strategy.”
Dad looked at me.
That time, he couldn’t hide the recognition quickly enough.
My stomach tightened.
“Dad?”
He pushed back from the table.
“I need some air.”
“You’re already outside.”
Aunt Rebecca made a small choking sound.
Dad ignored her.
I took out my phone.
“One more thing.”
I opened a scanned contract Claire had sent me that morning.
Northlight Strategy had been incorporated eleven years ago.
The listed organizer was a law firm.
The beneficial owner was sealed.
But one old bank document had survived.
An authorization page.
I enlarged the signature.
My mother saw it first.
Her champagne glass slipped from her fingers and shattered on the stone.
Vanessa screamed.
Everyone stared.
Mom didn’t.
Her eyes were locked on my phone.
The signature belonged to her.
MARGARET BENNETT.
Dad whispered, “Margaret.”
She stood so fast that her chair fell backward.
“I can explain.”
My entire childhood seemed to fracture inside those three words.
“You own Northlight?”
“No.”
“You signed the bank authorization.”
“It’s complicated.”
Vanessa laughed hysterically.
“Oh, now it’s complicated?”
Mom looked at Daniel.
Not me.
Daniel looked away.
My pulse slowed.
That told me more than any confession.
They knew each other’s involvement.
“How long?” I asked.
Mom swallowed.
“Audrey—”
“How long have you and Daniel been working together?”
Vanessa went completely still.
Daniel snapped, “We weren’t working together.”
Mom whispered, “Please.”
I stared at her.
“Please what?”
Claire’s phone buzzed.
She checked it.
Her expression changed.
“Audrey.”
“What?”
“Our forensic team found another transfer.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“How much?”
“One point eight million.”
My father cursed under his breath.
“Recipient?”
Claire hesitated.
I knew immediately that it was worse.
“Claire.”
She looked toward Vanessa.
“The recipient account is jointly controlled.”
“By who?”
Claire turned her phone around.
Two names appeared on the screen.
The first was Daniel Parker.
The second was Margaret Bennett.
My mother.
Vanessa stared at them.

Then she whispered the question nobody wanted answered.
“Mom… why do you have a secret bank account with my husband?”
