Chapter 12 - Father and Son Turned on Each Other

Richard and Victor were not escaping together.
We learned that three hours later.
The plane landed unexpectedly in Kentucky.
Richard got off.
Victor didn’t.
Richard called me from the terminal.
“I want a deal.”
I almost laughed.
“You told me twelve hours ago I wasn’t powerful enough to touch you.”
“I was wrong.”
It was the first honest sentence I had ever heard from him.
“What happened?”
“Victor thinks I betrayed him.”
“You protected him.”
“Not enough.”
Richard sounded old.
Not powerful.
Not frightening.
Old.
He explained.
Victor wanted Richard to sign a statement claiming Evelyn had transferred all Mercer interests before her death.
Richard refused.
Not from morality.
Because he knew the document could be disproven.
Victor threatened him.
The son had become the father.
“You taught him well,” I said.
Richard went silent.
“What do you want from me?”
“Protection.”
“No.”
“Then why would I help you?”
“You’re not helping me.”
I looked through the ICU glass at Clara sleeping.
“You’re deciding whether you tell the truth while you still have the option.”
Richard’s breathing changed.
Then he said:
“Victor recorded the attack.”
I froze.
“Why?”
“Insurance.”
Of course.
In their world, everyone collected leverage.
Even against family.
“Where’s the recording?”
“Cloud account. Rebecca has the credentials.”
“We have Rebecca.”
Richard almost laughed.
“Then you have everything.”
Not quite.
“Why did you let them attack Clara?”
He went silent.
I waited.
The answer mattered to Clara more than the rest.
Finally:
“Because I hated her.”
No excuse.
“At first because she wasn’t mine.”
I closed my eyes.
“Then because Evelyn loved her differently.”
His voice grew rough.
“And later because Clara looked at me like she could see exactly what I was.”
“She could.”
“Yes.”
He exhaled.
“When she married you, I thought she had escaped me.”
There it was.
Not family honor.
Not tradition.
Control.
“And the baby?”
His voice cracked for the first time.
“I didn’t intend that.”
I felt nothing for him.
Intent did not resurrect Grace.
Richard agreed to surrender and provide a full statement through counsel.
By evening, Rebecca produced Victor’s cloud recording.
I did not watch it.
I could not.
Clara decided whether she wanted to.
She chose no.
“I remember enough.”
The recording proved Victor escalated the violence after Richard ordered Clara held inside.
It proved several brothers participated.
It proved Luke tried to intervene.
It proved Caleb stopped after realizing Clara was bleeding.
It proved Richard did nothing meaningful to stop what he had started.
Most importantly, it ended their ability to rewrite the night.
But Victor was still missing.
Then Miriam called.
“He contacted me.”
My pulse jumped.
“What does he want?”
“The Reeves trust.”
“He can’t touch it.”
“He knows.”
Pause.
“He wants Clara to give it to him voluntarily.”
I almost laughed.
“Why would she?”
Miriam’s voice trembled.
“Because he has someone.”
My blood went cold.
“Who?”
There was a knock at Clara’s hospital-room door.
I turned.
The room outside was empty.
A nurse found an envelope on the floor.
Inside was a photograph taken less than an hour earlier.
A woman tied to a chair.
Miriam screamed when she saw it.
May you like
The woman was her daughter.
Clara’s cousin, Rachel.
