Chapter 4 - THE HUSBAND WHO FINALLY BELIEVED ME

:
Thomas sat in my living room that evening without speaking.
For the first time in our marriage, I saw him truly afraid of his father.
Not angry.
Not confused.
Afraid.
He stared at the floor.
“I didn't know.”
“I believe you.”
He looked at me.
“Why?”
“Because I watched him manipulate you too.”
He swallowed.
“Jocelyn…”
“What?”
“I thought you were imagining things.”
“I know.”
“I told you to be careful around my father.”
“You told me to apologize to him.”
“I know.”
He covered his face.
“I hate that.”
I sat across from him.
“So do I.”
Silence.
Then he said:
“He told me you were trying to isolate me.”
I looked at him.
“He said I was jealous of your family.”
“He did.”
“He said you were unstable.”
“He did.”
“He made me believe you didn't love me.”
Thomas looked up.
“And you did.”
“I did love you.”
His eyes filled.
“I know.”
The words hurt.
Because love had not protected us.
Truth might have.
Caroline entered with new documents.
“There is another problem.”
I stood.
“What?”
“The Sterling Legacy Trust has been activated.”
“By whom?”
“Victor.”
“How?”
“He filed the trigger event.”
I froze.
“What trigger?”
“Your alleged incapacity.”
I looked at the paperwork.
My signature was attached.
Again.
Forged.
Victor had moved quickly.
The trust's assets had begun transferring.
We had less than twenty-four hours to stop the transfer.
Thomas stood.
“I'll testify.”
Caroline looked at him.
“That could destroy your father's defense.”
“I know.”
“You could lose your family.”
Thomas looked at me.
“My family is already broken.”
He turned toward Caroline.
“Tell me what I need to do.”
The next morning, Thomas gave a recorded statement.
He explained the manipulation.
The marriage agreement.
The conversations.
The financial arrangements.
The pressure from his father.
Then we uncovered one more piece.
A recording hidden in Victor's study.
His voice.
Talking to a private investigator.
“Once Jocelyn is declared incompetent, Thomas signs.”
The investigator asked:
“And the juice?”
Victor answered:
“It will make her appear confused.”
My stomach turned.
“He planned to use my behavior as evidence.”
“Yes.”
“And if I resisted?”
A pause.
“Then we escalate.”
I stared at the recording.
Thomas closed his eyes.
“How did I not see this?”
“You were his son.”
“That's not an excuse.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“But it is an explanation.”
Then the detectives arrived.
They had a warrant for Victor.
But he was gone.
His private plane had left the airport twenty minutes earlier.
We traced the destination.
Canada.
A rural property owned under a shell company.
I looked at Thomas.
“Let's go.”
He frowned.
“You want to follow him?”
“No.”
I picked up the file.
“I want to finish this.”
Before we left, Brianna appeared.
She looked exhausted.
Her father had tried to poison her too.
She stood in the doorway.
“I want to help.”
Thomas looked at her.
“Brianna…”
“I know what I did.”
“What?”
“I defended Dad.”
She began crying.
“I thought Jocelyn was trying to take everything from us.”
I looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because he told me you would destroy the family.”
“You believed him.”
“Yes.”
She held out a flash drive.
“I found this in his office.”
Caroline took it.
Inside were photographs.
Bank statements.
And a document titled:
PROJECT STEEL.
I opened it.
The first paragraph made my blood run cold.
Objective: consolidate all Sterling assets under one family-controlled trust by manipulating marital relationships.
My name appeared.
Thomas's name.
Brianna's.
Margaret's.
Everyone.
Then a final line:
Primary threat: Jocelyn. Secondary threat: any child born from the marriage.
I stared.
“Why the child?”
Brianna looked at me.
“Because your father left the trust to your future children.”
I felt the room spin.
My husband and I had been trying to start a family.
Victor knew.
And that was why he needed me under control before we had one.
Then Caroline found another file.
A pregnancy test.
Dated three months earlier.
Positive.
My hands began shaking.
May you like
I looked at Thomas.
“I'm pregnant.”
