Chapter 9 - THE FILE MY FATHER WAS DESPERATE TO DESTROY

The duplicate drive contained a folder Ava had never opened.

She had downloaded it automatically with the rest of the foundation server.

The folder was password protected.

Daniel’s forensic team cracked it overnight.

Inside were recordings.

Arthur liked recording meetings.

Powerful men often do when they assume recordings will protect them.

One file was dated the night before Ava’s accident.

Arthur’s voice came first.

“She reports this and we lose the foundation.”

Then Beatrice.

“What about Nora?”

“She’s useful if we need fresh money.”

My stomach turned.

Chloe spoke next.

“I’m not asking Nora for anything.”

That surprised me.

Arthur laughed.

“You’ll ask whoever I tell you to ask.”

Then Ava’s name appeared.

Beatrice said:

“Pay her.”

Arthur replied:

“She won’t take it.”

A long silence.

Then my mother asked:

“So what are you going to do?”

Arthur answered:

“Make the problem unable to testify.”

The recording ended.

Rachel immediately preserved copies with independent counsel.

I sat staring at the screen.

For all my father’s control, arrogance had created his worst enemy.

His own voice.

There was another recording.

This one was two weeks earlier.

Arthur discussed the million-dollar transfer with Beatrice.

The money had been moved because the foundation was preparing to purchase an accessible apartment complex in Queens.

Sarah’s original mission was finally about to expand.

Arthur saw the purchase money and decided he needed it for something else.

His real-estate investments were failing.

He owed private lenders nearly four million dollars.

The stolen million was a temporary patch.

Then Ava noticed.

Everything after that was damage control.

My parents had walked into my penthouse not because Chloe had suddenly made one mistake.

Their entire financial life was collapsing.

My company’s success made me the obvious target.

Again.

Then Daniel found another problem.

Arthur had scheduled an emergency foundation board meeting for Friday.

The agenda contained one item:

REMOVE CHLOE VANCE AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR.

Chloe was about to become the official explanation for everything.

Every stolen dollar.

Every false invoice.

Every forged donation.

Arthur intended to place all responsibility on his favorite daughter.

For the first time in our lives, Chloe understood the truth I had learned at sixteen.

Our parents did not have favorite children.

They had useful children.

And when usefulness ended, so did love.

Chloe called me that night.

Her voice shook.

“I want to help Ava.”

“Then tell the truth.”

“I could go to prison.”

“Yes.”

She went silent.

I did not comfort her.

Accountability was not cruelty.

Finally she said:

“I have something Dad doesn’t know I kept.”

“What?”

“A phone.”

The old phone contained years of messages from Arthur and Beatrice instructing Chloe to approve payments, hide expenses, and sign documents.

But the final message was different.

Sent two hours after Ava’s accident.

Arthur to Chloe:

YOU WERE DRUNK. YOU HIT HER. IF ANYONE ASKS, YOU REMEMBER NOTHING ELSE.

Chloe whispered:

“He spent six weeks making me believe I did it.”

Then she sent me another photograph.

May you like

It showed Arthur’s shirt from that night.

On the cuff was blood.
