Chapter 14 - I DIDN’T GIVE HIM THE FORGIVENESS HE EXPECTED

Dad cried.

I did not.

Maybe I had already used all those tears years earlier.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

“I believe you’re sorry.”

His eyes opened.

“But?”

“But I don’t know you.”

That hurt him.

It was also true.

The man in the hospital bed was my biological father.

He was not someone who knew my favorite food.

The first building I developed.

How many prosthetic sockets I had gone through.

Who stayed with me during my worst surgeries.

Aunt Sarah knew those things.

My employees knew some.

He did not.

“Can we start again?”

“No.”

His face fell.

Then I continued.

“We can start from where we actually are.”

“What does that mean?”

“One phone call next month.”

He blinked.

“That’s all?”

“Yes.”

Not weekly dinners.

Not family holidays.

Not access to everything because illness had made time feel urgent.

One call.

He nodded.

Mom struggled more.

She wanted immediate reconciliation.

She cried that she had been “a different person then.”

Maybe.

But the woman asking me to hurry forgiveness still sounded familiar.

I kept distance.

Chloe supported me.

That surprised everyone.

“She gets to decide,” Chloe told Mom.

For the first time, my sister defended my boundary instead of benefiting from its absence.

Dad and I had the phone call.

Then another two months later.

Some were awkward.

Some better.

He never asked for money again.

That mattered.

Then Leah called with news.

She had been appointed to New York City’s advisory committee on inclusive building design.

“Congratulations.”

“I blame you.”

“Fair.”

Then:

“Do you remember when we first met?”

“Yes.”

“I asked how you trusted your body again.”

“Yes.”

“I think I have an answer now.”

I waited.

“I stopped needing it to become what it was before.”

I smiled.

“That sounds right.”

The sentence applied to more than bodies.

Families too.

My family would never become what it was supposed to be.

Maybe healing meant stopping the demand that it return to an imaginary original shape.
