Chapter 11 - THE FRAUD BURIED INSIDE MY COMPANY

The next morning, Ethan finally contacted us.
Not by phone.
Through Julian’s office.
A courier delivered a flash drive and a handwritten note.
I’m safe. I didn’t know who to trust.
The drive contained everything.
Five years earlier, while MedAxis was expanding, Ben had quietly created a vendor network using stolen identities and fake consulting contracts.
He never worked directly for my company.
He didn’t need to.
He befriended contractors.
Manipulated junior employees.
Used information Lauren shared.
And most importantly, he exploited my father.
Dad had been proud of my company.
Too proud.
He loved telling people how successful I was.
He showed Ben internal reports I had once printed for a family discussion.
He bragged about acquisition interest.
He handed a predator exactly the map he needed.
Crestline Consulting had siphoned money from MedAxis.
Not enough to destroy the business.
Enough to create leverage.
Then came the worse discovery.
One of the software licensing disclosures used during my company sale contained a falsified supporting document.
If exposed carelessly, the buyer could accuse me of misrepresentation.
“I didn’t know,” I said.
Julian nodded.
“I believe you.”
“But proving that could take years.”
“Yes.”
Dad sat across from me.
For once, he did not defend himself.
“I caused this.”
“No.”
He looked up.
“You helped cause it.”
The difference mattered.
Ben was responsible for his crimes.
My father was responsible for his arrogance and carelessness.
Lauren was responsible for giving Ben access.
Mom was responsible for helping hide the family’s debts.
And I was responsible for pretending money could substitute for boundaries.
That was the part I had to own.
Then Julian opened another file from Ethan’s drive.
“There’s something else.”
The false licensing document carried a digital fingerprint.
A laptop identifier.
Lauren recognized it.
“That’s Ben’s old Dell.”
Detective Hale smiled for the first time.
“That helps.”
“How much?”
“A lot.”
The forged document could now be traced directly to Ben.
Then another file appeared.
Audio.
Ethan had recorded a conversation after becoming suspicious.
Ben’s voice.
My father’s voice.
Dad looked confused.
“I never met him about this.”
The recording played.
Ben said:
“If Miranda ever finds out, we both lose everything.”
Then Dad’s voice answered:
“She won’t.”
Mom gasped.
I stared at my father.
He turned white.
“That isn’t me.”
The voice sounded exactly like him.
But then Ethan’s note explained it.
AI-generated voice cloning.
Ben had created fake evidence to frame Dad if the scheme was exposed.
Julian looked at Detective Hale.
“He planned every layer.”
The detective nodded.
“And people who plan this carefully usually have one final exit.”
At that exact moment, Lauren’s phone buzzed.
A bank alert.
Her joint account balance had dropped to zero.

Ben was moving.
And he had taken everything she had left.
