Chapter 6 - THE COOLER CONTAINING OUR BLOOD

Border agents stopped the vehicle before it entered Canada.

Thomas was driving.

Karen sat beside him.

Dr. Mercer’s son, Julian, was in the back seat.

The medical cooler contained blood samples.

Mine.

Allison’s.

Megan’s.

And Laura’s.

It also held tissue slides from my childhood leukemia treatment.

The purpose became clear after investigators opened files on Julian’s laptop.

My parents planned to create genetic reports claiming Laura and I were biologically related.

If successful, they would argue Laura concealed a family connection while adopting me.

That could support their accusation that the adoption was arranged through fraud.

The science would not survive independent testing.

But forged laboratory documents could create public confusion.

Laura stared at the report.

“They collected my blood?”

A hospital wellness screening had been compromised.

Dr. Mercer’s clinic processed samples.

He retained hers without consent.

They intended to turn biology into another weapon.

Megan’s sample served a different purpose.

A paternity report showed Thomas was not her biological father.

Karen had kept that secret for thirty years.

Thomas discovered it only after reviewing the cooler files during their escape.

According to Julian, the discovery caused an argument inside the cabin.

Charles Bennett threatened to cooperate with authorities.

Thomas shot him.

Karen helped stage the confession.

The family alliance collapsed in the final hours.

Karen blamed Thomas for every crime.

Thomas blamed Karen.

Both blamed Dr. Mercer.

Julian cooperated immediately.

He claimed his father forced him to transport samples.

Investigators found no evidence he knew about the attempted treatment alteration.

He still faced charges involving stolen medical material.

Karen and Thomas were brought back under guard.

The lawsuit against me was dismissed.

Then prosecutors filed a sweeping indictment.

Attempted murder.

Insurance fraud.

Medical conspiracy.

Trust theft.

Guardianship abuse.

Unlawful confinement.

Kidnapping.

Forgery.

And the murder of Charles Bennett.

News outlets surrounded the courthouse.

My graduation speech spread online.

People repeated the sentence about those who remain when staying becomes difficult.

Some called me inspiring.

Others treated my childhood like entertainment.

I gave no interviews.

Allison required privacy.

She had spent twenty-five years being defined by false medical records.

We refused to let a new audience claim her.

Laura welcomed Allison into our home.

Not permanently at first.

She needed specialized support.

She chose a small apartment near a recovery center.

I visited every weekend.

We learned each other slowly.

She loved mystery novels.

Hated bananas.

Remembered songs from our childhood home.

Megan struggled with the paternity revelation.

Thomas had raised her as the favored daughter.

Now she learned his protection had always been conditional too.

When she visited him in custody, he refused to speak with her.

“He says I’m not his child,” she told me.

“You were yesterday.”

“I was useful yesterday.”

The realization broke her.

I did not tell her our pain was equal.

It was not.

But I understood what it meant to be converted from daughter into calculation.

Megan resigned from the family company.

She surrendered control of questionable assets.

Federal receivers took over.

The stolen trusts could be restored.

Yet the accountants discovered one remaining problem.

The company had recently transferred twenty million dollars into a foundation bearing my name.

The Emily Carter Childhood Cancer Fund.

Publicly, it appeared charitable.

In reality, it was created three weeks before graduation.

Karen and Thomas planned to announce that they had supported pediatric cancer research for years.

They intended to use my story to launder their reputation.

Worse, the foundation contained money stolen from other vulnerable children.

My case was not the only one.
