Chapter 8 - THE RECORDING THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Daniel Price survived.
Barely.
He was taken to the hospital under police guard.
The pink box was secured as evidence.
Inside were the documents Margaret had stolen.
But there was something else.
A small cassette tape.
Old-fashioned.
Ethan stared at it.
“My grandfather used these.”
Collins found a player.
We listened.
A man's voice filled the room.
Ethan's grandfather.
“If you're hearing this, Margaret has attempted to take control of the trust.”
Then came another voice.
Margaret.
“You promised me the house.”
“I promised you nothing.”
“You owe me.”
“No.”
“You're going to regret this.”
The recording continued.
Margaret admitted stealing money.
She admitted forging documents.
And then she said something that made Ethan stand.
“I can make your grandson hate his wife.”
His grandfather answered:
“You can try.”
Margaret laughed.
“She'll leave.”
“She won't.”
“Then I'll make her.”
The recording ended.
I looked at Ethan.
“She planned this before we even married.”
He nodded.
The final recording contained a date.
Six months before our wedding.
Margaret had already been building a case against me.
She had collected photographs.
Messages.
Bank records.
Anything she could twist into evidence.
But why?
Because she had discovered that Ethan's grandfather had changed the trust.
The new trust protected Ethan's spouse.
If Ethan stayed married, Margaret couldn't access the property.
If we divorced under certain conditions, Madison could become beneficiary.
It was a carefully designed trap.
But Margaret had underestimated one thing.
She had underestimated Lily.
The detective opened the pink box.
Inside was a handwritten note.
Lily's handwriting.
I had forgotten she had placed it there months earlier.
It read:
Grandma said this box was boring.
I didn't think so.
Underneath the note was a USB drive.
Collins plugged it into his laptop.
A video appeared.
Lily had accidentally recorded Margaret entering my office.
Margaret was talking to Madison.
“Your brother must leave Claire.”
Madison answered:
“What if he doesn't?”
“Then we destroy Claire's reputation.”
“How?”
Margaret looked toward the camera.
“Money.”
She explained the fraud scheme.
The forged trust document.
The fake bank transfers.
The false accusations.
Everything.
But then Margaret said something even worse.
“Once Ethan is arrested, Claire will panic.”
Madison asked:
“And Lily?”
Margaret's voice became cold.
“We'll tell the court Claire is unstable.”
My hands trembled.
They had planned to use my daughter against me.
Collins stopped the video.
“We have enough.”
But I shook my head.
“No.”
“What?”
“There's something missing.”
“What?”
“The money.”
The $1.2 million fraud accusation.
Where had it gone?
Collins looked at the bank records.
Then he froze.
“Wait.”
He traced the account.
The money hadn't been transferred to Margaret.
It had been transferred to Victoria Hale.
The same attorney.
But Victoria hadn't kept it.
She had moved it again.
To another account.
I looked at the account holder.
My heart stopped.
The account belonged to…
Richard.
Ethan's father.
Everyone turned toward him.
Richard began crying.
“I can explain.”
Ethan stared.
“Dad?”
Richard shook his head.
“I never wanted this.”
“Then why did you take the money?”
“I didn't.”
“Your account received it.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Richard looked at me.
“Because Margaret told me if I didn't cooperate, she'd expose what I did twenty years ago.”
“What did you do?”
He closed his eyes.
“I helped her hide Rachel.”
Rachel stood frozen.
May you like
Richard whispered:
“I was the one who signed the adoption papers.”
