Chapter 13 - The Letter My Husband Burned

Ethan admitted everything.

He had received my father’s letter three days before our wedding.

It warned me that Ethan Morgan had been connected to Arthur.

It begged me not to marry him.

Ethan burned it.

“I loved you,” he said during his recorded confession.

I almost laughed.

People like Ethan confused possession with love.

“You married me for the archive.”

“At first.”

“At first?”

“I didn’t expect…”

He stopped.

I waited.

“I didn’t expect you to be you.”

That answer might once have broken me.

Now it changed nothing.

Ethan confessed to hiding my father’s warnings.

Helping Arthur monitor me.

Planting Rebecca’s messages.

And standing behind the balcony doors while Margaret pushed me.

“Why didn’t you help me?”

His eyes filled.

“Because Arthur said if you survived, we were all dead.”

“So you watched.”

“Yes.”

That single word ended whatever remained between us.

I filed for divorce from my hospital bed.

Federal prosecutors charged Ethan with conspiracy, fraud, kidnapping-related offenses, obstruction, and attempted murder conspiracy.

His testimony would reduce his sentence.

Not erase it.

Margaret recovered from the poisoning only to learn Arthur had been arrested.

She immediately began cooperating too.

They turned on each other faster than I expected.

Emily testified.

Rebecca testified.

My father testified.

And I testified.

But there was still one mystery.

Emily’s child.

The newborn bracelet found inside the wall.

Emily had believed her daughter died shortly after birth.

Margaret told her the baby was stillborn.

But hospital records had been altered.

Rebecca had discovered payments to a private adoption attorney.

Mason reopened everything.

Weeks passed.

My body slowly healed.

The cast came off.

Then came braces.

Physical therapy.

Pain.

Frustration.

Learning to stand again.

Dad stayed.

Every appointment.

Every difficult night.

Every step.

Then one afternoon, Mason walked into rehabilitation holding a folder.

Emily immediately stood.

His expression made her cover her mouth.

“We found her.”

Emily began crying before he said another word.

Her daughter had been placed through an illegal private adoption seven years earlier.

The adoptive parents had no idea she was kidnapped.

They believed the adoption was legitimate.

The little girl was alive.

Healthy.

Loved.

Her name was Grace.

Emily sank into a chair.

“Can I see her?”

Mason hesitated.

“There’s something else.”

He opened the folder.

Grace’s adoptive father was someone we all knew.

Detective Mason looked at me.

“Her father is Dr. Andrew Hale.”

Rebecca’s older brother.
