Chapter 7 - THE CALLS STARTED BEFORE I LANDED

By the time I landed at Heathrow, I had 112 missed calls on my old number forwarded through a secure service.
Eric:
Forty-seven.
Diane:
Thirty-nine.
Madison:
Eleven.
Other relatives:
Fifteen.
I listened to exactly three voicemails.
Eric first.
“What the hell did you do?”
Second:
“You sold our house behind my back?”
Our.
Interesting.
Third:
“You need to call me before Mom has a breakdown.”
Not:
Are you safe?
Not:
Where are you?
Mom.
Still.
I turned off voicemail notifications.
My company car took me to a temporary apartment in Canary Wharf.
Small.
Modern.
Quiet.
I put my suitcase beside the bed and cried for the first time.
Not because I regretted leaving.
Because safety can make postponed grief arrive all at once.
Three days later, Laura called.
“Eric retained counsel.”
“Good.”
“He’s claiming marital contribution.”
“The prenup?”
“Very clear.”
“Can he undo the sale?”
“No.”
Relief.
Then:
“But there’s a bigger issue.”
The lender involved in the attempted equity loan had contacted Laura after learning the property sold.
They had a signed authorization form.
Supposedly from me.
I knew before she said it.
Forged.
Again.
The document granted Eric authority to discuss secured borrowing on my behalf.
Signature:
Mine.
Witness:
Diane Dalton.
I closed my eyes.
“How many times did they forge my name?”
“We’re still finding out.”
Then Laura asked:
“Did you ever sign a limited power of attorney for Eric?”
“No.”
“Never?”
“Never.”
A second document had surfaced.
LIMITED PROPERTY POWER OF ATTORNEY.
It allowed Eric to negotiate refinancing, liens, and title changes.
My signature appeared at the bottom.
Not mine.
Not even close.
Notarized by:
Patricia Cole.
I knew the name.
Diane’s best friend.
A notary public.
I stared out at the London skyline.
This was no longer just a bad marriage.
They had built a paper trail meant to make my refusal irrelevant.
Then Laura said:
“One more thing.”
The power of attorney was dated seven months earlier.
Long before Madison moved in.
May you like
Long before Eric told me to watch my mouth.
The plan to gain control of my house had started almost a year before I realized there was a problem.
