Chapter 7 - THE LEDGER BEHIND THE PORTRAIT

Vanessa was not hurt.

We learned that fifteen minutes later.

She had locked herself in a bathroom after hearing someone enter the east wing.

The intruder disappeared before Robert’s old security company arrived.

Nothing obvious was taken.

Except one thing.

The portrait.

The wall behind it was open.

The ledger was gone.

But Vanessa had photographed every page.

For once, paranoia saved us.

We met at Martin’s office.

Vanessa walked in wearing sunglasses even though it was evening.

She removed them.

Her eyes were red.

She looked at me.

“I’m sorry.”

I said nothing.

“For Christmas.”

Still nothing.

“I was awful.”

“Yes.”

“I was scared.”

“So was my dress.”

Daniel actually laughed.

A short, shocked laugh.

I didn’t mean it as humor.

Maybe I did.

Vanessa almost smiled.

Then she handed Martin a drive.

The ledger showed systematic theft from Whitmore Heritage.

Nearly $6.8 million over five years.

Fake consulting companies.

Inflated property maintenance.

Legal retainers.

Medical advisory contracts.

Leonard and Samuel appeared repeatedly.

Patricia appeared twice.

Smaller amounts.

$40,000.

$65,000.

“Mom took money,” Daniel whispered.

Vanessa shook her head.

“She says they were loans.”

“Were they?”

“No documentation.”

Of course.

Then another name appeared.

DANIEL CARTER.

$75,000.

I looked at my husband.

He went pale.

“That’s the payment you said covered your mother’s debt.”

“It did.”

Vanessa looked confused.

“What debt?”

Daniel explained.

Patricia told him she owed a private lender.

He paid it.

Later, she reimbursed him through her family LLC.

But the ledger showed the money came from Whitmore Heritage.

Meaning Patricia had used stolen company funds to repay Daniel.

He hadn’t known.

Maybe.

Then Martin found something else.

The private lender Patricia supposedly owed?

Owned by Leonard Vale.

The debt itself might have been fabricated.

“Why?” I asked.

Vanessa answered.

“To move money.”

Create a fake debt.

Have Daniel pay Leonard.

Use Whitmore Heritage funds to reimburse Daniel.

Money becomes harder to trace.

And Daniel becomes connected to the transactions.

Insurance.

If the scheme ever surfaced, they could implicate him.

He stared at the ledger.

“My mother used me.”

Vanessa’s face broke.

“She used all of us.”

That was the first time the siblings sounded alike.

Then Martin traced the photo of Vanessa’s shattered phone.

The sender had captured it from inside the mansion.

Someone still had access.

Who?

Security logs showed a side entrance code used at 4:12 p.m.

Code assigned to:

PATRICIA WHITMORE.

But Patricia claimed she had been at a salon.

Receipts confirmed it.

Who knew her code?

Vanessa.

Daniel.

Richard.

Samuel.

Leonard.

Too many people.

Then a second security camera gave us something.

A dark sedan leaving the service road.

License plate visible.

Registered to Samuel Price.

Daniel looked grim.

“Uncle Samuel.”

We called.

No answer.

Martin’s investigator checked his office.

Closed early.

Home?

Empty.

Then we received an alert.

Samuel had purchased a one-way ticket to Vancouver.

Departure in three hours.

Was he running?

Or being framed?

Martin contacted appropriate authorities regarding the trust fraud evidence.

I sat back.

Everything was accelerating.

Then Vanessa opened one more photograph.

A page from the ledger we hadn’t reviewed.

At the bottom, handwritten:

EVELYN TRANSFER - FINAL TRIGGER.

My name.

Next to it:

Upon vesting, initiate marital challenge and incapacity petition.

My chest went cold.

“Incapacity?”

Martin frowned.

There was no incapacity petition yet.

But apparently one was planned.

Then Daniel whispered:

“Samuel’s a doctor.”

Exactly.

The medical declaration challenging Grandpa had been step one.

Next, they planned to claim I was mentally unfit to manage the trust.

“Based on what?”

Vanessa scrolled.

A note.

Document psychiatric instability after domestic incident.

Christmas.

The humiliation.

The provocation.

They wanted me angry.

Maybe hysterical.

Maybe recorded.

Then use my reaction as evidence.

I thought of Daniel whispering, leave quietly.

He hadn’t merely been protecting the family image.

Maybe some part of him knew they wanted me to explode.

Then Martin received a new email.

Subject:

EVELYN CARTER - CLINICAL ASSESSMENT.

Sender:

Dr. Samuel Price.

Attached was a psychiatric evaluation.

Diagnoses.

Paranoia.

Impulse-control problems.

Delusional fixation on family property.

Signed by Samuel.

Date:

Two weeks before Christmas.

I stared.

I had never been evaluated by him.

Never sat in his office.

Never discussed mental health.

Samuel had created a fake medical record before Patricia ever dumped stew on me.

The Christmas incident had been staged to make the diagnosis look believable.

But Samuel made one mistake.

He listed medication I had supposedly been taking.

May you like

A drug I was severely allergic to.

And my medical records proved it.
