Chapter 7 - Confrontation at Midnight

We returned to the dining room to find Patricia sitting in the exact same spot, staring blankly at the half-eaten bakery cake.
She didn't even look up as we entered the room and placed the wooden box and the financial files on the table in front of her.
Mark pulled out a chair and sat directly across from her, his expression cold and unreadable.
"Look at me, Patricia," Mark commanded.
Slowly, she raised her head, her eyes bloodshot and filled with a mixture of fear and lingering defiance.
"You spent my entire life telling me I wasn't good enough," Mark began, his voice steady and powerful. "You criticized my choices, my career, and the wonderful woman I married."
"You did it because every time you looked at me, you saw the living ghost of the sister you betrayed and imprisoned," Mark continued.
Patricia swallowed hard, her lips trembling.
"I raised you," Patricia whispered defensively. "I fed you, clothed you, and gave you a good life."
"You raised me in a prison of lies," Mark corrected her sharply. "You stole my identity, you stole my mother's life, and you stole millions of dollars that rightfully belonged to our family."
Detective Miller stepped forward, placing a pair of steel handcuffs on the mahogany table right next to the birthday cake.
"Patricia Thomas, you are under arrest for kidnapping, financial fraud, and the unlawful confinement of Eleanor Vance," Detective Miller stated officially.
Patricia stared at the handcuffs as if they were venomous snakes.
"You can't do this to me," Patricia whimpered, looking toward her husband for salvation. "Thomas, tell them not to do this."
Thomas looked down at his wife, his expression entirely devoid of pity.
"You made your bed, Patricia," Thomas said coldly. "Now you will spend the rest of your life lying in it."
Detective Miller picked up the handcuffs and stepped behind Patricia's chair.

The metallic click of the cuffs locking into place echoed through the quiet room like a final sentence.
The woman who had ruled the family with an iron fist for decades was finally powerless.
