Chapter 2 - The Envelope Under Register Three

The strangest thing about discovering your husband may have framed you for corporate theft is that your brain still notices ordinary details.

The music was playing.

A mannequin near the entrance still wore the red fall collection.

Someone’s cappuccino was getting cold beside the accessories display.

And my husband was standing ten feet away from me staring at a brown envelope as if it contained a loaded weapon.

“Open it,” Elaine demanded.

Jonathan immediately said, “No.”

Elaine snapped toward the phone.

“You don’t give orders in my family.”

“This is not your family’s company.”

Her expression hardened.

“Yet.”

That single word caught everyone’s attention.

Including Jonathan’s.

He paused.

“What does that mean, Elaine?”

She realized too late what she had said.

“Nothing.”

Grant interrupted.

“Mom, stop talking.”

I looked from him to her.

Interesting.

Five minutes earlier, Elaine had been the conquering queen.

Now her own son wanted her silent.

The front doors opened.

Three people entered.

I recognized one immediately: Simone Reed, Belle & Vale’s chief compliance officer.

Beside her were corporate counsel David Park and a security supervisor.

No dramatic uniforms.

No raised voices.

Just people carrying laptops and sealed evidence bags.

That somehow made the scene feel much worse.

Simone approached me.

“Claire, are you okay?”

“I’m fine.”

She glanced at Grant.

“Has anyone accessed the office?”

“No.”

“Registers?”

“Elaine removed my nameplate. That’s all I saw.”

Simone looked at Tessa.

Tessa nodded.

“I’ve been watching the counters.”

“Good.”

Simone pulled on thin gloves.

She photographed the envelope before removing it from my hands.

Grant suddenly said, “You need a warrant.”

David Park looked almost amused.

“This is company property.”

Grant’s jaw tightened.

Simone opened the envelope.

Inside were printed transaction logs.

Dozens of them.

Refunds.

Vendor credits.

Inventory adjustments.

Each transaction showed the same employee authorization.

Mine.

CLAIRE MORGAN - STORE DIRECTOR.

Elaine smiled again.

“There. Proof.”

I didn’t move.

Because something was wrong.

The timestamps.

Three transactions had occurred while I was attending a training conference in Chicago.

Another had happened at 3:17 a.m.

Our registers weren’t even accessible at 3:17 a.m.

Simone handed me one page.

“Do you recognize the vendor?”

HARTCREST DISTRIBUTION LLC.

“No.”

Grant looked away.

I noticed.

“So you do,” I said.

He shook his head.

“No.”

“You just reacted.”

“I reacted because you’re accusing me.”

“I didn’t accuse you.”

Silence.

That was the mistake.

He had defended himself before anyone blamed him.

Simone continued sorting documents.

Then she stopped.

At the bottom of the envelope was a small black device.

A hardware authentication key.

Mine had disappeared three months earlier.

I had reported it immediately.

“This is my old security key.”

Grant spoke too quickly.

“You lose things constantly.”

I stared at him.

“I lost this once.”

Simone placed it into an evidence pouch.

Jonathan’s voice came through my phone.

“Simone, check the last page.”

She did.

Her expression became unreadable.

“What?” I asked.

She handed the page to David.

He stared at it.

Then at Grant.

Elaine stepped forward.

“What is it?”

David turned the paper around.

It was an internal server access record.

Someone had logged into Belle & Vale’s payment system using my security key.

But the computer used for the login was not mine.

The device had been registered to Grant.

Elaine whispered:

“That proves nothing.”

Simone shook her head.

“Actually, it proves something very specific.”

Grant backed toward the fitting rooms.

And that was when Tessa spoke for the first time.

“There’s more.”

Everyone looked at her.

She swallowed.

“Three nights ago, I saw Grant inside Claire’s office.”

My husband stared at her.

Tessa’s voice trembled.

“He wasn’t alone.”

I felt my stomach drop.

“Who was with him?”

May you like

Tessa looked directly at Elaine.

“Her.”
