Chapter 20 - THE UNBROKEN HORIZON

Fifteen years have passed since the night I dragged my broken leg through the mud.
I am sitting in the kitchen of Open Door House.
The sun is rising, casting a warm, golden glow across the clean tile floor.
The house is quiet, save for the soft hum of the coffee maker and the distant sound of city traffic waking up.
I walk over to the glass display case mounted in the hallway.
I look at the rusted metal bottle opener sitting quietly behind the glass.
It is such a small, insignificant tool.
Yet, it was the fulcrum upon which my entire destiny turned.
It represents the exact moment I refused to wait for a savior and decided to save myself.
Mrs. Delgado walks down the stairs, carrying a stack of fresh towels.
She smiles at me, her face lined with the beautiful wrinkles of a life well-lived.
“Good morning, Director,” she says cheerfully.
“Good morning, my friend,” I reply.

My leg still aches when the winter winds blow, but I walk without a cane most days.
Noah is in his final year of college, studying social work.
James just won his first major civil rights case in federal court.
Derek’s name is completely forgotten by the world, buried under the heavy weight of his own hubris.
The empire of Mercer Gardens is gone, replaced by the unbreakable legacy of Open Door House.
I walk over to the heavy front door.
I reach out and turn the deadbolt.
The lock clicks open with a loud, satisfying sound.
I push the heavy oak door wide open, letting the cool, fresh morning breeze sweep into the house.
I do not close it.
I stand on the threshold, breathing in the scent of freedom.
There are no more cages.
There are no more monsters waiting in the dark.
There is only the open sky, the rising sun, and an unbroken horizon stretching endlessly before us.

The story of my captivity is officially over.
The story of my absolute, triumphant freedom will last forever.
