Chapter 3 - THE MARRIAGE THAT STARTED AS A BUSINESS PLAN

Vanessa stood so quickly her chair tipped backward.

“At first?”

Daniel ignored her.

His eyes stayed on me.

I could hear my heartbeat.

Not because I still wanted him to say he had loved me from the beginning.

Because some pathetic part of me had spent the last three months trying to understand when our marriage became a lie.

Apparently the answer was before it began.

“How early?” I asked.

Daniel said nothing.

“First date?”

“No.”

“The charity gala?”

He looked away.

That was enough.

Our first meeting had not been accidental.

I met Daniel Mercer at a hospital foundation gala four years earlier.

He spilled champagne near my chair.

Apologized.

Made me laugh.

Asked me to dance.

For years, he told people fate had put us at the same table.

No.

Someone put us there.

“Who arranged it?”

Margaret whispered:

“Richard.”

I turned.

“Daniel’s father was already dead.”

“Before he died.”

My stomach tightened.

Richard Mercer had known my grandfather planned to make me sole beneficiary of the trust.

He told Daniel that the company “belonged with a Mercer.”

Then he gave his son a strategy.

Get close to Claire.

Make himself indispensable.

If love happened, fine.

If marriage happened, better.

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“My father didn’t order me to marry you.”

“He introduced the possibility.”

“Yes.”

“And you followed it.”

“Yes.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“You told me you met her by accident.”

Daniel snapped:

“Stay out of this.”

She laughed incredulously.

“I’m carrying your baby.”

The sentence filled the room.

For the first time, Daniel looked trapped by his own choices.

I stood.

“Did you ever love me?”

His expression changed.

“Yes.”

I hated how quickly he answered.

“Yes, Claire.”

“Before or after the wedding?”

“Before.”

“Before or after you discovered I couldn’t simply transfer Mercer Development to you?”

His silence destroyed the answer.

I nodded slowly.

“There it is.”

He came around the table.

“Things changed.”

I stepped back.

“No.”

“I did fall in love with you.”

“You fell in love with the life.”

“That’s not fair.”

I actually smiled.

“Tonight you stood in my grandfather’s house with your pregnant mistress and demanded I surrender my property and company.”

He stopped.

“You do not get to lecture me about fair.”

Then Evelyn’s investigator’s phone vibrated.

He glanced down.

“We found the domestic destination account.”

Everyone turned.

Mercury Ridge Partners had transferred money into an account titled:

MERCER LEGACY RECOVERY TRUST.

Daniel closed his eyes.

There it was.

“What is that?” I asked.

He said nothing.

Evelyn did.

“A private trust created fourteen months ago.”

“Beneficiary?”

She read.

“Daniel Mercer.”

Of course.

Then:

“Contingent beneficiary: Vanessa Ellison.”

My sister froze.

“What?”

I looked at her.

She looked genuinely horrified.

“Why am I beneficiary?”

Daniel answered too quickly.

“For the baby.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

“What?”

“If anything happened to me, I wanted you protected.”

She stared at him.

“You created a trust in my name before we started sleeping together?”

Silence.

The affair officially began eight months ago.

The trust was fourteen months old.

Six months earlier.

“Daniel.”

Vanessa’s voice cracked.

“When did this actually start?”

He said:

“Emotionally?”

That was a terrible answer.

She slapped him.

Hard.

Margaret gasped.

I did nothing.

Daniel held his cheek.

Vanessa started crying.

“You came to me after Claire’s fertility appointments.”

I felt something colder than anger.

“What?”

Vanessa looked at me.

“I’m sorry.”

I didn’t want her apology.

Not yet.

“What did he do?”

After my appointments, Daniel sometimes told Vanessa I was distant.

Obsessed with getting pregnant.

Destroying the marriage.

Vanessa listened.

Comforted him.

Daniel began transferring money to her.

Creating dependency.

Flirting.

Building a future.

Then one night, six months before they supposedly began their affair, they kissed.

“Eight months was a lie.”

Vanessa nodded.

“How long?”

“Fourteen.”

Exactly when the trust was created.

I laughed once.

Daniel had not fallen into an affair.

He had financed one.

Then Evelyn’s investigator added:

“There’s more.”

I wondered if that phrase would ever stop ruining my life.

Mercer Legacy Recovery Trust had received $2.3 million.

Not $840,000.

Bellmar was only one source.

Four other shell vendors fed it.

My stomach dropped.

“How much did Daniel divert total?”

“Preliminary estimate?”

Pause.

“Four point seven million dollars.”

Margaret covered her mouth.

Daniel said:

“That money belongs to Mercer.”

I turned.

“Mercer Development?”

“No.”

His voice hardened.

“My family.”

There it was again.

His entire moral argument.

The surname on the building meant ownership.

History meant entitlement.

Marriage meant access.

Then Evelyn asked:

“Where is the agreement you claim Charles Ellison signed?”

Daniel stared at her.

“In a safe.”

“Where?”

“My office.”

Marissa Cole finally spoke.

“Your office is now sealed pending forensic review.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“You can’t keep me out.”

“I can keep a terminated president out of company systems.”

He stepped toward her.

Margaret said:

“Daniel.”

Something in her voice stopped him.

Then she looked at me.

“Claire, before anyone opens that safe, there’s something you need to know.”

“What?”

“The agreement Richard showed Daniel…”

She swallowed.

“I watched Charles sign it.”

The room went still.

My grandfather may actually have signed a document promising equity back to the Mercer family.

If that was true, Daniel’s theft was still theft.

But the ownership story might be more complicated than I knew.

Margaret continued:

“There were two copies.”

“Where is the other one?”

She looked directly at me.

“Your grandfather kept it.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

Then she said:

“But the last time Richard saw it, Charles had written one sentence across the first page.”

My pulse accelerated.

“What sentence?”

May you like

Margaret whispered:

“Daniel Mercer must never see the original.”
