Chapter 10 - VANESSA HAD KNOWN MORE THAN SHE ADMITTED

By sunrise, my sympathy for Vanessa was gone.

Maybe Elliot used her.

Maybe Martin manipulated her.

But she had signed an affidavit attacking me before any of us walked into Meridian.

That required choice.

We met at Richard’s offices at 7:30 a.m.

Vanessa arrived with counsel.

Dominic arrived separately.

Nobody sat together.

Claire placed the affidavit in front of Vanessa.

“Did you sign this?”

Her lawyer whispered something.

Vanessa answered.

“Yes.”

Dominic stared.

“You knew about Martin?”

“No.”

“Then why sign a document for him?”

“I didn’t know it was for Martin.”

“Who gave it to you?”

“Elliot.”

Of course.

Her brother told her Dominic was preparing to divorce me.

He said I would use Mercer resources to retaliate.

He claimed the affidavit merely documented things Dominic had already told Vanessa privately.

“What things?” I asked.

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“That you controlled lenders.”

“I never told you that,” Dominic said.

“You told me Evelyn had mysterious family money.”

He froze.

I looked at him.

When had he discovered even that much?

He rubbed his face.

“I found an old account statement last year.”

There it was.

Another secret.

He knew more than he admitted.

Not Mercer specifically.

But enough to suspect I had independent wealth.

“And that bothered you?” I asked.

“Yes.”

At least he answered.

“Why?”

“Because I didn’t know where it came from.”

“You could have asked.”

“You spent years hiding it.”

“I did.”

Again, my mistake.

Not his excuse.

Vanessa continued.

“Elliot told me you were setting Dominic up.”

“So you lied under oath.”

“I repeated what I believed.”

Claire’s voice sharpened.

“You stated that Mrs. Vale personally threatened to call company debt if Mr. Vale divorced her.”

Vanessa looked down.

“She didn’t.”

“No.”

“So where did that statement come from?”

Silence.

Dominic finally understood.

“You were helping them build a case against Evelyn.”

“I thought I was protecting you.”

He laughed.

The line had become almost absurd.

Everyone was protecting everyone while destroying them.

Then Vanessa’s lawyer asked for a recess.

Twenty minutes later, she returned willing to cooperate fully.

Self-preservation had finally chosen a direction.

She gave us access to her messages with Elliot.

Most were ordinary sibling conversations.

Then, five months earlier:

ELLIOT: If DV moves forward personally, don’t rush him.

VANESSA: What does that mean?

ELLIOT: Let him believe every decision is his.

My skin crawled.

Another:

ELLIOT: Has he talked divorce?

VANESSA: Not seriously.

ELLIOT: He will.

Then three weeks ago:

VANESSA: He says he wants Evelyn out after Meridian.

ELLIOT: Perfect.

There it was.

Vanessa had not manufactured Dominic’s desire to divorce me.

But she had reported it.

Elliot passed it to Martin.

Martin used it.

Then we found the message after Dominic transferred the penthouse:

VANESSA: He says he put the apartment in my future trust.

ELLIOT: Send me anything legal gives you. I’ll make sure it’s protected.

Vanessa sent documents.

Elliot swapped beneficiary structures before filing.

Dominic believed he was giving the penthouse to Vanessa.

Vanessa believed her brother was protecting it.

In reality, Halstead ended up controlling it.

Two selfish people walked willingly into a trap because both assumed they were getting something from me.

I almost admired the efficiency.

Then Naomi entered.

The court had granted a temporary restraining order.

Martin could not transfer additional Mercer-held Vale debt until a hearing.

We had breathing room.

Dominic exhaled.

Then Naomi added:

“There’s a catch.”

Martin had already transferred one more participation before the order took effect.

“How much?” Richard asked.

“Twelve percent.”

To whom?

Not Halstead.

A hedge fund named Carrington Bridge.

Dominic went pale.

“Why does that name matter?” I asked.

He looked at me.

“Because Carrington already owns nine percent of Vale Maritime stock.”

Debt plus equity.

Enough leverage to influence a takeover.

Then Claire received another message.

Carrington Bridge had filed a request for an emergency shareholder meeting.

Purpose:

Remove Dominic Vale as CEO.

And replace him with an interim executive nominated by Carrington.

The proposed name appeared on the filing.

May you like

Samuel Vale.

Dominic’s own brother.
