Chapter 1 - THE DOCUMENT HE NEVER EXPECTED

Daniel placed the final document on the judge’s desk.
Jason stared at it as if the paper itself were a weapon.
“What is that?” his attorney demanded.
Daniel didn’t answer him.
He looked at the judge.
“Your Honor, this is the original operating agreement for Mitchell Medical Technologies, dated eleven years ago.”
Jason laughed nervously.
“That’s impossible. I founded that company.”
I finally turned toward him.
“No, Jason.”
His smile disappeared.
“You registered it,” I said. “That isn’t the same thing.”
The courtroom became strangely quiet.
Daniel opened a second folder.
“The company’s first capital contribution came from a private account belonging to my client.”
Jason shook his head.
“She’s lying.”
Daniel slid the bank statement forward.
“Seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars.”
Jason’s attorney leaned closer.
His expression changed.
Daniel continued.
“The account was funded by an inheritance Mrs. Mitchell received from her grandfather six months before the company was established.”
Jason looked at me.
“You told me that money was gone.”
“I told you what you needed to believe.”
Madison suddenly stepped away from him.
Jason noticed.
“Stay with me,” he whispered.
She didn’t answer.
The judge examined the documents.
“Why was the company registered solely in Mr. Mitchell’s name?”
I took a breath.
“Because Jason promised me it would be temporary.”
Jason’s face hardened.
“You agreed to that.”
“I agreed to help you build a company.”
I pointed toward the evidence.
“I never agreed to let you steal it.”
Daniel produced another document.
“This is the original ownership schedule. My client held forty-nine percent initially. The remaining fifty-one percent was held through a family trust.”
Jason’s attorney stood.
“That trust was dissolved.”
Daniel smiled.
“No. It was hidden.”
A murmur moved through the courtroom.
Jason suddenly slammed his hand against the table.
“This is ridiculous!”
The judge struck the gavel.
“Mr. Mitchell, control yourself.”
Jason sat down.
But his eyes never left me.
For ten years, he had believed my silence meant weakness.
He was finally discovering that silence could also mean preparation.
Daniel turned another page.
“And there is one more issue.”
The judge looked up.
“What issue?”
Daniel’s voice became colder.
“The money transferred out of the company three days before Mrs. Mitchell filed for divorce.”
Jason went still.
“You told the court those funds were marital assets.”
“They were.”
“No,” Daniel replied.
“They were company funds.”
Jason’s attorney suddenly whispered something in his ear.
Jason looked toward Madison.
And for the first time, fear appeared in his eyes.
Because the missing money hadn’t gone into another account.
May you like
It had gone somewhere much worse.
It had been used to buy something that could expose them both.
