Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN WHO DIED TWICE

The death certificate changed everything.

My mother had supposedly died in the car crash.

But the document proved someone had prepared her death years earlier.

Caleb stared at the paper.

“This wasn't insurance fraud.”

“What was it?”

“An identity erasure.”

We returned to the old family records.

There were two versions of my mother's identity.

One ended with the crash.

The other continued for years.

Bank accounts.

Travel records.

Medical appointments.

A passport.

Someone had been living under her name.

I felt sick.

“Is Mom alive?”

Caleb didn't answer.

We followed the trail to a small coastal town in North Carolina.

There, we found an old nursing facility.

A woman lived in a private room at the end of the hall.

Her hair was silver.

Her body was frail.

But when she looked up, I knew.

“Mom?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Maren.”

I collapsed beside her.

For fifteen years, I had mourned her.

She had been alive.

She had been hidden.

She explained everything.

After the crash, she survived.

But Victor Hale found her first.

He threatened Emily's life.

He told her that if she went to police, her children would disappear.

So she vanished.

She had spent years collecting evidence.

But she couldn't safely contact us.

“Why now?” I asked.

“Because Nathan made a mistake.”

“What mistake?”

“He trusted his mother.”

My mother handed me a small envelope.

Inside was a letter.

It was from our grandmother.

The final paragraph read:

The person who controls the trust must never know about Emily until the final transfer.

I stared at it.

“That means Grandma knew.”

“She knew everything,” Mom said.

“Then why didn't she help?”

“Because she wanted the trust.”

My mother closed her eyes.

“She believed power was the only way to protect the family.”

Caleb shook his head.

“She destroyed the family trying to save it.”

Mom nodded.

“And now she wants you to come home.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because she knows the trust transfers tomorrow.”

I felt a chill.

“Transfers to whom?”

Mom looked directly into my eyes.

“To Emily.”

Suddenly, the entire conspiracy made sense.

They weren't trying to kill me because of my shares.

They were trying to erase Emily.

Because once she was legally recognized, she would become the rightful heir.

And someone had already planned what would happen when that day came.
