Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN IN MY JACKET

Daniel made it halfway down the aisle before I stood.

Rachel grabbed my arm.

“Please tell me we’re leaving.”

“We’re leaving.”

Daniel saw that.

His pace quickened.

The woman followed him.

Still wearing my Christmas gift.

For one irrational second, that bothered me almost as much as the kiss.

I did not wait for him.

Rachel and I moved with the crowd toward the concourse.

My phone vibrated continuously.

DANIEL.

DANIEL.

DANIEL.

Then a text.

PLEASE DON’T DO THIS HERE.

I stared at it.

He was still worried about what I might do.

Interesting.

Another message:

SHE’S A CLIENT.

Rachel looked over my shoulder.

“Clients usually wear your husband’s clothes?”

I almost laughed.

Then Daniel appeared twenty feet behind us.

“Wait!”

People turned.

I kept walking.

The woman stopped following him.

That was the first useful thing she did.

At the exit, Daniel caught up.

He stepped in front of me.

“It isn’t what you think.”

I looked at him.

“No?”

“She was cold.”

“You kissed her head.”

“It was nothing.”

“So why did you decline my call?”

His mouth opened.

Closed.

Rachel folded her arms.

Daniel glanced at her.

“This is between my wife and me.”

Rachel smiled.

“Then maybe don’t conduct it on a forty-foot screen.”

I nearly smiled.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Can we go home?”

“No.”

His expression changed.

“What?”

“I’m going with Rachel.”

“Why?”

That question told me more than his excuses.

Because apparently even after getting caught, he still assumed I would return home with him and continue the conversation on his terms.

I took out my phone.

Opened our banking app.

Daniel’s face changed immediately.

Tiny.

But I saw it.

“What are you doing?”

“Checking something.”

“Now?”

“Yes.”

Our joint checking looked normal.

Savings looked normal.

Then I opened our shared credit card.

Three charges from that morning.

Raceway Club Hospitality.

$1,840.

Champagne package.

$620.

VIP parking.

$185.

Daniel had told me his client thing was downtown.

Instead, our money had purchased the date where I caught him.

Rachel whispered:

“You paid for this?”

“Apparently.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Those are reimbursable.”

“Through work?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

I looked at him.

“Then your expense report should be easy to explain.”

His face went pale.

That was when I knew the affair was not the only thing he feared.

The woman in his jacket had followed us again.

She stopped several feet away.

“Daniel?”

He turned sharply.

“Kayla, go back inside.”

Kayla.

Not Lila.

Not a client.

A woman with a name he apparently did not want me hearing.

She looked at me.

Then said:

“Your wife doesn’t know about Denver, does she?”

May you like

Daniel went completely still.

And suddenly the Fan Cam kiss became the smallest problem in the stadium.
