Chapter 5 - THE SISTER WHO FINALLY STOPPED LYING

Isabella asked to speak with me.
I refused.
Then her attorney delivered one sentence:
She will identify M.
I changed my mind.
Not alone.
Tessa sat beside me.
Marcus remained outside.
Isabella wore hospital scrubs provided after police took her red dress and shoes as evidence.
Without makeup, she looked younger.
Not innocent.
Just human.
“I’m not apologizing yet,” she said.
I stared.
“Then this will be short.”
“I need you to understand why.”
“No.”
Her eyes flashed.
“That’s exactly how your father was.”
I leaned forward.
“You injected an unauthorized drug into a pregnant woman.”
She looked away.
“I was told it would only make you sleepy.”
“Do you hear yourself?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“I thought if you signed, everything stopped.”
“What stopped?”
“The merger pressure.”
“The audit.”
“Martin.”
There it was.
“M is Martin.”
She nodded.
Tessa asked:
“Did he send the texts?”
“Yes.”
“Can you prove it?”
“His second phone.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
“Then what can you prove?”
Isabella swallowed.
“He paid Dr. Lane.”
“We know.”
“He told hospital administration you had a history of anxiety.”
“False.”
“I know.”
“He prepared the incapacity route.”
“Why did you cooperate?”
Her face hardened.
“Because he told me your father killed mine.”
Marcus heard that through the cracked door.
He entered.
“What?”
Isabella started crying.
“Martin told me Henry Bennett sabotaged Dad’s audit.”
Marcus stared.
“Our father died in a car accident.”
“He said Henry leaked documents to someone who threatened Dad. He said Dad drove out that night because Henry forced a confrontation.”
Tessa shook her head.
“Henry was in Boston that week.”
“I didn’t know!”
“So you drugged Khloe based on a story.”
“I spent fourteen years believing her father destroyed ours.”
I felt anger burn through me.
“You ate dinner at my house.”
She flinched.
“You held my baby shower.”
“I know.”
“You smiled in photographs with me.”
“I know.”
“And all that time, you thought my father killed yours?”
“Yes.”
“Then why encourage Marcus to marry me?”
Silence.
Marcus slowly turned.
“Isabella?”
She looked at him.
“Because Martin wanted the Bennett trust inside the family.”
There it was.
Marcus’s face emptied.
“How long?”
“Since you started dating.”
“We met at a charity auction.”
“Martin knew she would be there.”
I stopped breathing.
“What?”
Isabella looked at me.
“He sponsored your table.”
My stomach dropped.
The event had raised money for pediatric housing.
Marcus had “accidentally” taken the wrong seat beside me.
We talked for two hours.
He asked for my number.
I had believed it was chance.
Marcus looked sick.
“I didn’t know.”
“I know.”
“Did Mom?”
Isabella hesitated.
“Yes.”
Marianne had known the meeting was engineered.
Maybe not the love.
But the introduction.
Marcus walked away from the table.
His hands shook.
“Our marriage…”
I interrupted.
“Don’t.”
I could not handle that question yet.
Isabella continued.
“Martin said if you married a Vale, the Bennett note could eventually be settled privately.”
Tessa nodded.
“Unless the child trigger activated first.”
“Yes.”
“So once Khloe got pregnant…”
“The timeline changed.”
The Ardent merger became urgent.
The family needed my consent before birth.
Or an incapacity finding that allowed someone else to sign.
“Why Isabella?” I asked.
“Why not Martin himself?”
She laughed bitterly.
“Because he never gets his hands dirty.”
Then she gave us the first real piece of evidence against him.
A hidden account.
Cypress Advisory.
Payments from a Martin-controlled entity to Dr. Lane.
Hospital consultants.
A private investigator.
And Isabella.
“How much did he pay you?”
Her face crumpled.
“1.8 million.”
Marcus stared.
“You took money?”
“I thought it was compensation for the shares I’d lose after the audit.”
“You were paid to help incapacitate my wife.”
“I didn’t think it would go this far.”
“No one ever does,” Tessa said coldly.
Then Isabella leaned toward me.
“There’s something else.”
“What?”
“Martin wasn’t the first person to use Dr. Lane.”
“Who was?”
She looked at Marcus.
“Your mother.”
Marianne.
“On who?”
Isabella’s voice dropped.
May you like
“Henry Bennett.”
My father.
