Chapter 13 - THE JUDGE'S WIFE

A new crisis arrived at Open Door House in the middle of a heavy spring thunderstorm.

A woman named Sarah walked into the lobby, drenched in rain and trembling violently.

She was dressed in expensive, designer clothing that had been torn at the shoulder.

Her face was bruised, and her left eye was swollen completely shut.

Mrs. Delgado immediately wrapped a thick, warm blanket around her trembling shoulders.

I brought her a cup of hot tea.

When she finally spoke, her voice was a fragile, terrified whisper.

“You cannot help me,” she said, staring at the floor.

“We have resources,” I replied gently.

“You do not understand,” she sobbed. “My husband is a superior court judge.”

The room went completely silent.

“He knows all the police commanders,” she continued.

“He plays golf with the district attorneys.”

“If I file a report, he will ensure the paperwork disappears before morning.”

“He told me that if I ever tried to leave, he would legally take my children and commit me to a psychiatric ward.”

I looked at Rachel, our lead attorney.

Her eyes hardened with a familiar, righteous anger.

The Mercer family had used their immense wealth and social connections to build an identical fortress of immunity.

They had believed that the law was simply a weapon to be purchased.

I sat down next to Sarah and took her cold, trembling hand in mine.

“Sarah, look at me,” I said softly but firmly.

She slowly raised her head.

“Ten years ago, a billionaire family tried to bury me in a private facility,” I told her.

“They owned the doctors, the lawyers, and the property.”

“They failed.”

I pointed toward Rachel.

“We have a fifty-million-dollar legal restitution fund sitting in the bank.”

“Your husband’s local connections mean absolutely nothing to us.”

“We will hire federal litigators.”

“We will move your children to a secure, undisclosed location out of state.”

“We will hire private forensic accountants to audit every single dollar he has ever hidden.”

Sarah’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief.

“You would do that for me?”

“We will tear his entire empire to the ground,” I promised her.

She took a deep, shuddering breath, and for the first time, the terror in her eyes was replaced by a spark of hope.
