Chapter 7 - THE DAUGHTER LORRAINE ERASED

Rachel Pike had spent forty-one years believing the wrong woman gave birth to her.

Claire listened as Rachel explained the pieces.

Lorraine became pregnant during her brief marriage to Gregory.

Their relationship collapsed before the baby was born.

Lorraine did not want motherhood.

Gregory did.

Susan, then Gregory’s close friend, agreed to raise the child.

Within a year, Gregory married Susan.

Records were altered legally through an adoption process that Lorraine demanded remain private.

“Why didn’t Susan tell you?” Claire asked.

“She planned to.”

“When?”

“Before she died.”

Claire’s voice softened.

“I’m sorry.”

Rachel took a breath.

“She left letters. I found them last month.”

That timing caught Claire’s attention.

“Why last month?”

“Because my father sold her old house.”

Rachel had found a metal box hidden behind a removable panel in a closet.

Inside were letters, financial statements, photographs, and copies of agreements.

Lorraine had never fully disappeared from Gregory’s life.

She had used him.

He had used her.

And together, they had spent decades moving money through private deals.

“Why contact me now?”

“Because your name appears in the box.”

Claire went still.

“My name?”

“Not exactly yours.”

Rachel sent a photograph.

It showed a handwritten note from Lorraine dated three years earlier.

MARK’S WIFE IS THE CLEANEST OPTION. STRONG INCOME. NO DEBT. GOOD CREDIT. SHE TRUSTS HIM.

Claire felt something inside her turn cold.

Three years.

This had not begun with Arizona.

It had not begun with a declined credit card.

Lorraine had been planning to use Claire’s financial identity for years.

Claire forwarded the note to Priya.

“This is significant,” Priya said.

“For the fraud?”

“For showing intent, potentially. We need authentication.”

Rachel had the original.

She agreed to provide it through counsel.

That evening Claire arrived in Florence.

Her hotel room overlooked terracotta rooftops glowing under sunset.

She should have felt destroyed.

Instead, she felt focused.

Mark had married a woman who trusted him.

His family had mistaken trust for stupidity.

That mistake was finally becoming expensive.

At 10:17 p.m., Dana called.

She sounded terrified.

“Claire, Mom disappeared.”

“What do you mean?”

“She left the hotel.”

“Maybe she went somewhere.”

“She took her passport.”

Claire sat upright.

“Where’s Mark?”

“Looking for her.”

“Did she take luggage?”

“One bag.”

Claire immediately messaged Priya.

Lorraine might be trying to leave.

But fifteen minutes later, Dana called again.

They had found Lorraine.

Not at the airport.

Not at another hotel.

She was sitting in the lobby speaking quietly with a man who had arrived from the mainland that afternoon.

Dana secretly photographed him.

Claire opened the image.

She recognized him instantly from Rachel’s pictures.

Gregory Pike.

Lorraine’s ex-husband.

Rachel’s father.

And apparently, even after forty years, Lorraine’s favorite accomplice.

But Dana had recorded part of their conversation too.

Claire pressed play.

May you like

Gregory’s voice was barely audible.

“You promised me Mark would never learn who his real father was.”
