Chapter 11 - THE MAN AT MY MOTHER'S GATE

Lily was safe.

The rabbit was not proof of kidnapping.

Marcus had taken it from the garden after my mother’s dog dragged it outside.

That distinction mattered.

Barely.

British police surrounded the property.

Marcus did not run.

He raised his hands.

Then asked to speak to me.

I went with counsel.

Not alone.

He sat in an interview room.

Sixty.

Elegant.

Cold.

Nothing dramatic about him.

That made him worse.

“You look like Jonathan.”

I sat.

“You killed him.”

“Yes.”

No hesitation.

My hands curled.

“Why?”

“He was going to expose Northstar.”

“He should have.”

“Yes.”

I stared.

“You regret it?”

“No.”

At least he was honest.

“Why surrender?”

“Because you won NordTech.”

“So?”

“You activated the system.”

“And transferred the controlling option.”

His mouth tightened.

“You moved faster than expected.”

“Good.”

He studied me.

“You think you stopped me.”

“Didn’t I?”

“No.”

My stomach tightened.

“What do you want?”

“Your help.”

I laughed.

“Never.”

“You haven’t heard the problem.”

“I don’t care.”

“You will.”

He leaned forward.

“Northstar was compromised years before Jonathan found out.”

“By you.”

“No.”

I stopped.

“Then who?”

“Michael Walker.”

Ethan’s father.

I frowned.

“Michael worked with you.”

“At first.”

Of course.

“Then?”

“He sold independent access.”

“To who?”

“Several buyers.”

My stomach dropped.

“How many?”

“Enough.”

“And the route Ethan mentioned?”

“Not mine.”

I stared.

“Then whose?”

Marcus smiled faintly.

“Robert Kessler.”

The name meant something.

A private security billionaire.

European.

Publicly legitimate.

Privately rumored to be involved in military contracting.

“What does he want?”

“Northstar’s biometric authorization.”

“Why?”

“To restore permanent access.”

“And why surrender to me?”

“Because only you can close the system completely.”

My heart pounded.

“How?”

“Destroy the inheritance key.”

“Meaning?”

“Remove Quinn blood access forever.”

I sat back.

“That sounds easy.”

“It isn’t.”

“What’s required?”

Marcus looked at me.

“Your shares.”

My stomach tightened.

“You want me to surrender control of Ashbourne.”

“Partially.”

“No.”

“Then Lily remains a key.”

My anger turned cold.

“Don’t say her name.”

“She is a legal biometric successor.”

“Then change it.”

“Only you can.”

“How?”

“Revoke the family option.”

“And lose?”

“Northstar.”

I understood.

The patents.

The value.

The leverage.

Billions.

All gone.

I thought of Lily sleeping with one hand under her cheek.

Easy.

“Fine.”

Marcus blinked.

“What?”

“Destroy it.”

He stared.

“You’d give up billions?”

“Yes.”

“Without speaking to your board?”

“I’ll speak to them.”

“They may refuse.”

“Then I’ll resign and vote my shares.”

For the first time, Marcus looked surprised.

My father had probably been the same.

Powerful men always assumed everyone loved power as much as they did.

I stood.

“Anything else?”

“Yes.”

I stopped.

Marcus’s expression changed.

“Ethan didn’t know you were a target when he married you.”

I stared.

“What?”

“His father planned it. Sophia introduced him. But Ethan believed the goal was financial intelligence.”

“That’s not better.”

“No.”

“Why tell me?”

“Because three months after your wedding, Ethan contacted me.”

My stomach tightened.

“What did he say?”

“That he wanted out.”

I stopped breathing.

Marcus continued.

“He offered me money to erase your name from Northstar monitoring.”

My heart hurt.

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“I wanted leverage.”

Of course.

Then Marcus said quietly,

“Your husband spent three years trying to protect you from a game he entered willingly.”

I looked at him.

“And still hit me.”

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.”

No excuses.

Good.

May you like

Then he added,

“And Sophia spent three years making sure he failed.”
