Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT EVERYTHING COLLAPSED

I wanted to go alone.

Daniel refused.

The police refused.

Claire refused.

But I knew Bradley.

He expected me to panic.

He expected me to make emotional decisions.

He had spent eight years believing emotion made me weak.

So I made a plan.

We arrived at the warehouse at 11:42 p.m.

The building was abandoned.

Rain hammered the metal roof.

I carried a briefcase.

Inside was a copy of the ledger.

The original remained with Daniel.

At midnight, the lights turned on.

Bradley stepped into view.

His clothes were soaked.

His face looked exhausted.

He wasn't holding the gun anymore.

But two men stood behind him.

My father was tied to a chair.

“Dad.”

He looked at me.

“Don't give him the ledger.”

Bradley laughed.

“You still think she's loyal to you?”

I stared at him.

“You kidnapped my father.”

“He knew too much.”

“You stole from my company.”

“I borrowed it.”

“You planned to destroy my reputation.”

“I planned to survive.”

“And you lied to Claire.”

Bradley looked toward her.

She stood behind me.

His expression changed.

“You brought her?”

Claire stepped forward.

“You used me.”

“I loved you.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You loved what I could give you.”

Bradley looked at me.

“You don't understand.”

“Then explain.”

He lowered the gun.

“My father left us with nothing.”

I almost laughed.

“You had money.”

“Not enough.”

“So you married me.”

“I needed your company.”

“And the baby?”

His expression hardened.

“The baby was supposed to secure my future.”

Claire stepped forward.

“Secure?”

Bradley looked at her.

“Once Maddie was gone, I would have needed a legitimate family.”

I stared at him.

“You planned to make Claire your wife.”

“Yes.”

“And my company?”

“Would become ours.”

I nodded slowly.

“At least you're finally telling the truth.”

Then I pressed a button on my phone.

A recording began playing.

Bradley's own voice.

Every confession.

Every admission.

Every transfer.

Every plan.

He stared at me.

“You recorded this?”

“I learned from you.”

The warehouse doors opened.

Federal agents stormed inside.

Bradley dropped the gun.

His men surrendered.

My father was freed.

I ran to him.

He hugged me so tightly I felt twelve years old again.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

“You should have told me.”

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

“I know.”

Across the warehouse, Bradley was being handcuffed.

He looked at me.

“You think this is over?”

I turned.

He smiled.

“You don't know who funded my father's operation.”

My blood ran cold.

“What?”

He laughed.

“You've been looking at my family.”

He nodded toward the ledger.

“You forgot one person.”

I looked at the final page.

There was a name I hadn't noticed.

My own.

MADDIE REED.

I stared.

My father saw it.

His face went white.

“No.”

“What?”

He took the ledger.

“That isn't possible.”

“What does it mean?”

He turned the page.

Behind my name was one sentence.

Primary beneficiary of the original trust.

I didn't understand.

Then my father whispered:

“Your mother left you the entire fortune.”

I stared at him.

“My mother?”

“She didn't die broke.”

He looked toward the agents.

“She died protecting it.”

Bradley's smile disappeared.

Because suddenly he understood.

May you like

The money he had spent years trying to steal wasn't mine.

It was worth far more than any of us had imagined.
