Chapter 2 - THE BILLIONAIRE FAMILY THAT NEVER STOPPED SEARCHING

Julian did not approach Maya immediately.
He had learned through years of negotiations that truth delivered too quickly could resemble another trap.
He contacted attorney Rebecca Sloan, who had handled the Sterling family trusts since his father’s death.
Rebecca reviewed the photographs, the ring, Maya’s original birth certificate, and adoption records filed under a false surname.
“There is enough to request emergency DNA testing,” she said.
“But we should proceed carefully.”
Maya’s inheritance was not small.
Celeste Sterling had owned twenty-eight percent of Sterling International before disappearing.
The shares had been held in trust for her daughter.
Over two decades of growth, dividends, and acquisitions, Maya’s interest was worth more than three billion dollars.
The press would call her a billionaire heiress.
Richard would see her as something else.
A fortune he believed marriage might allow him to control.
Meanwhile, Maya contacted a legal-aid attorney named Rachel Bennett.
Rachel watched the party video and examined Maya’s copied documents.
The life insurance policy carried Maya’s forged signature.
Richard had also opened three credit accounts using her identity.
One account funded Vanessa’s apartment.
Another paid for jewelry.
The third carried a balance of four hundred thousand dollars.
“You need a protective order,” Rachel said.
“And Lily should not be alone with him.”
Maya hesitated.
Richard had spent years telling her that courts favored wealthy men with stable families.
She owned almost nothing in her visible name.
He controlled the car, lease, and joint checking account.
Rachel leaned forward.
“He is counting on your fear of looking poor.”
“Family court examines safety, not birthday decorations.”
Maya agreed to file.
Before they finished, Richard called.
She placed the phone on speaker.
“Bring Lily home,” he ordered.
“No.”
“You kidnapped my daughter.”
“She is with her mother.”
“My attorney says I can have you arrested.”
“Then let your attorney speak to mine.”
Richard’s voice softened.
“Maya, yesterday got out of control.”
“My family was watching.”
“You embarrassed me.”
“You pushed my face into a cake.”
“You provoked me.”
The old pattern arrived exactly on schedule.
First denial.
Then blame.
Then affection.
“I love you,” he said.
“I’m willing to forgive this.”
Maya looked at Lily coloring beside Elena.
“I’m not asking for forgiveness.”
“I’m asking for a divorce.”
Richard became silent.
Then he whispered.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.”
The line disconnected.
That afternoon, Julian visited Rachel’s office under the pretense of discussing potential legal funding for domestic-abuse cases.
When Maya entered the conference room, he stood.
She looked at him cautiously.
Julian noticed Celeste immediately in the shape of her eyes.
He placed an old photograph on the table.
Maya stared at it.
The woman in the picture wore the orchid ring.
“Who is she?”
“My sister.”
“Celeste Sterling.”
Maya’s knees weakened.
“That was my mother’s name.”
Julian’s voice broke.
“And you are her daughter.”
Maya stepped backward.
Richard had warned her repeatedly about strangers who might claim to be relatives.
He said abandoned children were easy targets.
“Why should I believe you?”
“You shouldn’t.”
“Not yet.”
Julian placed a sealed DNA-test kit beside the photograph.

“You should verify everything independently.”
Then Rebecca Sloan opened a trust summary.
Maya saw her childhood name.
Maya Elise Sterling.
She saw Celeste’s signature.
And she saw an account balance containing more zeros than she could process.
Before she could speak, Rachel’s assistant rushed into the room.
Police had been called to Elena’s apartment.
Richard stood outside demanding Lily.
May you like
Vanessa was with him.
And Vanessa was carrying documents claiming Maya had been declared mentally unstable.
