Chapter 7 - THE LIE HE PUT IN MY FATHER'S MOUTH

My father had never considered me incapable of managing my life.

He taught me how to balance accounts when I was sixteen.

He helped me open my first investment account at twenty-one.

And when I married Ryan, he insisted that I understand every financial document before signing it.

Dad was protective.

Sometimes overly so.

But he never treated me as helpless.

Now Ryan was claiming that Dad had privately expressed concerns about my emotional stability and financial judgment.

The alleged statement appeared in a document signed by Miles Caldwell.

Ryan's banking friend.

The same man involved in the disputed loan.

Evelyn studied the affidavit carefully.

“He hasn't produced an original statement from your father.”

“Because there isn't one.”

“We'll challenge it.”

But I was tired of merely defending myself against lies.

I wanted to understand why Ryan had been gathering information about my father's property before our marriage.

Hannah found the answer in old correspondence connected to Maple Row's predecessor company.

Seven years earlier, shortly after Ryan proposed, he requested a valuation of Dad's house from a private property consultant.

I stared at the date.

Ryan and I had only been engaged for six weeks.

At the time, I believed he was saving money for our wedding.

Instead, he had been evaluating my father's property.

The discovery left me feeling physically sick.

Had he ever loved me?

Or had I been another investment?

Evelyn noticed my expression.

“Claire, documents can show what he did. They can't tell us everything he felt.”

She was right.

But his feelings no longer mattered as much as his actions.

And the actions were becoming increasingly clear.

The same week, Ashley agreed to provide certain financial records through her attorney.

Ryan had begun blaming her for the false invoices.

He claimed the boutique transactions were her idea.

Ashley was frightened.

Not because she suddenly understood how much she had hurt me.

Because she realized Ryan was willing to sacrifice her to protect himself.

She produced text messages showing that Ryan had instructed her to create invoices for merchandise she had not purchased.

In another exchange, he discussed using my authorization to obtain financing.

One message made my blood turn cold.

Claire won't agree while she thinks she has options. I'll handle her.

It had been sent the morning of our argument.

Evelyn preserved the messages and provided them to investigators.

Then Ashley disclosed something else.

Ryan had signed an agreement with an outside property developer.

The developer had agreed to pay a substantial advance in exchange for an option to purchase my house once Ryan obtained the necessary title documents.

He had already received part of that advance.

I stared at Ashley's statement.

Ryan wasn't simply planning to borrow against my property.

He was trying to sell it.

My father's house.

The place where I grew up.

The home Dad had built with his own hands.

The house Ryan told me I no longer controlled.

Then Hannah found the final detail in the developer's proposal.

The buyer intended to demolish the existing house and divide the estate into luxury residential lots.

Including the garden where Dad had planted a tree for every birthday I celebrated as a child.

I looked at the plans.

For the first time, I understood why Ryan had been so determined to obtain my signature.

He had already promised someone else a home that was never his to sell.
