Chapter 8 - THE GALA SPEECH HE HAD WRITTEN FOR ME

The crisis firm had drafted my resignation speech.

I stared at it until the words blurred.

For the good of the children we serve, I am stepping aside while questions regarding my oversight are reviewed.

Beautiful.

Responsible.

False.

Then:

I accept that my personal challenges may have distracted me from the foundation’s operational details.

Personal challenges.

Our collapsing marriage.

Useful.

Then:

I remain grateful to Grant for his steady leadership during this difficult season.

I laughed so hard Margaret stared at me.

“Sorry.”

I pointed.

“He wanted me to thank him.”

Yes.

Grant planned to move millions through BrightSteps, blame me for oversight failures, divorce me, publicly support me, then emerge as the steady Ashford protecting both business and charity.

Elegant.

Until the hospital called.

One administrative employee verifying an address had detonated the timeline.

Then Samuel, foundation chair, called.

The board had voted.

All BrightSteps grants suspended.

Outside investigation expanded.

My temporary recusal remained.

Good.

Grant’s access to foundation systems revoked pending review.

Better.

Then Ashford Hotels’ board announced its own independent inquiry because company personnel and systems had been used in grant processing.

Grant was placed on administrative leave.

He called me immediately.

This time I answered.

“You wanted this.”

His voice shook with rage.

“No.”

“You’re taking the company from me.”

“It was never yours.”

“My family built it.”

“Then maybe stop using it to hide a fake charity.”

Silence.

Then:

“You think Piper is on your side?”

“I don’t have a side with Piper.”

“She’s manipulating you.”

“Maybe.”

That was possible.

Then:

“You don’t know what she did.”

“What did she do?”

He stopped.

Interesting.

“Grant?”

“She stole foundation data.”

I looked at Margaret.

“Did you authorize her access?”

Silence.

There.

He had given her access first.

Then accused her of stealing when she kept copies.

Then Grant changed tactics.

“You want the truth?”

“Yes.”

“Piper knew the baby wasn’t mine.”

“I know.”

Silence.

“You spoke to her?”

“Yes.”

He exhaled sharply.

Then:

“I was going to raise him anyway.”

“That’s not what concerns me.”

“What does?”

“You created false documents under my name.”

His voice dropped.

“You can’t prove I created them.”

There.

Not:

I didn’t.

Can’t prove.

Then he hung up.

The next morning, Miles Harrow requested a meeting with foundation counsel.

Grant’s CFO friend.

He came with his own attorney.

He admitted he had seen unusual BrightSteps transactions.

Why stay silent?

Grant told him they were temporary restructuring transfers tied to a hotel acquisition.

Miles believed him at first.

Later he did not.

Then:

“Why text him yesterday?”

“Because I realized the foundation approvals might not be real.”

“You realized yesterday?”

He looked ashamed.

“No.”

There it was.

He had suspected for months.

Then he handed over an encrypted drive.

Internal emails.

One subject line stopped me.

VIV SIGNATURE LIBRARY.

A folder containing scanned examples of my signature.

Grant had assembled them personally.
