Chapter 11 - THE EXECUTIVE INSIDE MY COMPANY

The mole was not Malcolm.

I knew that before the review began.

Not because trust is proof.

Because Malcolm had repeatedly blocked decisions that would have made Camden’s plan easier.

The manipulated forecasts came from finance.

Specifically:

Chief Financial Officer Daniel Kerr.

Daniel had worked at Pierce Aero for four years.

Quiet.

Methodical.

Married.

Two children.

The kind of executive nobody remembered at parties.

Exactly the kind Camden would choose.

Nora and Malcolm confronted him with attorneys present.

He denied everything for twelve minutes.

Then they showed him email metadata linking his private account to Northstar.

He stopped.

“How much?” I asked.

Daniel stared at the table.

“Two hundred fifty thousand.”

“For what?”

“Consulting.”

Malcolm actually slammed his hand down.

“Don’t insult us.”

Daniel flinched.

Eventually, the truth came.

Camden paid him to create conservative forward projections.

Not obviously false.

Just pessimistic enough to reduce valuation.

Lower charter demand assumptions.

Higher maintenance costs.

Slower fleet utilization growth.

Each tweak defensible alone.

Together, they shaved tens of millions from Pierce Aero’s apparent value.

Northstar planned to acquire a controlling economic interest through a layered offer.

Camden would then “rescue” the company he had quietly weakened.

Classic.

Disgusting.

Effective.

“What made you agree?” I asked.

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Camden said you planned to sell anyway.”

“Did you verify?”

“No.”

“Why?”

He looked at me.

“He said you didn’t understand aviation.”

That hurt differently.

Not because Daniel believed it.

Because Camden had likely said it often.

Maybe that was how he justified everything.

Vivian inherited money.

Vivian didn’t understand operations.

Vivian got lucky.

Vivian’s father built the real value.

Camden worked.

Camden deserved.

Entitlement loves a story.

Then Daniel said:

“Richard told me the sale had board support.”

“Which directors?”

He named three.

Two had no idea.

One did.

Arthur Givens.

Longtime outside director.

Friend of my father.

The betrayal landed hard.

Arthur had known me since I was twelve.

He taught me how to read a balance sheet at my father’s dining table.

When confronted, he did not deny it.

He came to my office and closed the door.

“I thought Camden would professionalize the company.”

“By secretly buying it with diverted funds?”

His face tightened.

“I didn’t know that part.”

“But you knew the valuation was being pushed down.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Arthur sighed.

“Vivian, your father built Alden Meridian. You inherited responsibility before you were ready.”

I stared at him.

“I was thirty-six.”

“That doesn’t mean ready.”

“And Camden was?”

“He had hunger.”

There it was.

The word mediocre men use when they want ambition to excuse dishonesty.

I stood.

“You’re resigning.”

His eyes widened.

“You can’t—”

“I can.”

He looked stunned.

Then angry.

“Your father would never—”

“Do not use my father to defend helping someone forge his name.”

That ended it.

Arthur resigned by evening.

Daniel Kerr was suspended.

The acquisition offer was withdrawn.

But before Camden’s plan fully collapsed, Northstar’s lenders reacted.

They froze credit.

Called covenants.

Demanded information.

Northstar was not merely holding stolen assets.

It was heavily leveraged.

The Manhattan apartment.

Aspen villa.

New Canaan estate.

Vehicles.

Yacht share.

Most had debt.

Camden had built an empire on borrowed money secured by assets purchased with diverted funds.

When the flow stopped, the structure started falling.

Then Lila’s attorney called.

She wanted another meeting.

This time, she brought a document.

Prenuptial agreement.

Between her and Camden.

Drafted three weeks earlier.

He planned to marry her.

But the agreement contained one clause she had only just understood.

If the marriage ended, Lila waived all rights to Northstar assets.

May you like

Including the apartment where she thought she would raise their child.

Camden had been preparing to protect himself from her too.
