Chapter 8 - The Dark Secret Unveiled

Arthur, the head butler, stepped onto the stage holding a thick leather dossier stamped with a red federal seal. He handed the microphone to Catherine.
“Six years ago,” Catherine spoke, her voice calm, measured, and unyielding, “I hid my identity because I wanted to believe that love could exist without status. I married David Thorne. But over those six years, while I played the quiet housewife, my intelligence team monitored every ledger, every contract, and every private account of the Thorne Group.”
David stopped breathing. His blood ran cold.
“David thought his company was growing through his brilliant management,” Catherine continued, turning her gaze toward the media cameras strobing continuously. “In reality, Thorne Group has been insolvent for three years. To maintain his lavish lifestyle, David executed three systematic schemes.”
Catherine flipped a page on the digital screen:
Illicit Hazardous Dumping: Thorne Group’s chemical division had been illegally dumping industrial waste into the Hudson River basin to save $40 million in processing fees.
Systemic Tax Evasion & Wire Fraud: Over $120 million had been laundered through shell accounts in the Cayman Islands registered under Martha Thorne’s name.
Medical Poisoning: For the past four years, Martha Thorne had been slipping small doses of synthetic central nervous system depressants into Catherine’s daily morning tea to keep her lethargic, weak, and compliant.
The gallery gasped in sheer horror. Martha let out a high-pitched, hysterical shriek, collapsing backward into her chair, clutching her chest.
“Poisoning?!” Harrison Sterling’s voice thundered like a cannon shot. He stepped forward, his eyes burning with absolute, lethal fury. “You dared to poison a daughter of the Sterling family?!”
“No! It’s a lie! She fabricated the reports!” Martha screamed, her manicured wig falling askew as she thrashed in panic.
“The toxicology reports were certified three hours ago by the Chief of Forensic Pathology at Mount Sinai Hospital, Martha,” Catherine said coldly. “The chemical residue was retrieved directly from your private kitchen pantry.”
Before David could utter another lie, the heavy double doors at the back of the Grand Aster ballroom slammed open for the second time that night.
Two dozen armed federal agents from the FBI, accompanied by officers from the New York Police Department’s Special Victims Unit and the Environmental Protection Agency, marched down the central carpet.

The lead agent, Special Agent Marcus Vance, held up a stack of federal arrest warrants.
“David Thorne, Chloe Bennett, and Martha Thorne,” Agent Vance declared, his voice echoing across the silent hall. “You are under arrest for attempted murder by poisoning, felony child abuse, corporate wire fraud, RICO conspiracy, and environmental terrorism.”
