Chapter 10 - THE CHILD WHO DIDN'T EXIST

The Noah Whitmore Trust had been created seven years earlier.
Beneficiary:
Noah Richard Whitmore.
Date of birth:
March 18.
My stomach dropped.
March 18 was the date I had miscarried seven years ago.
I sat down.
“No.”
Evelyn looked at me.
“What?”
I turned the screen.
She went still.
Someone had created a trust for a child I lost.
Richard arrived with federal permission to meet me.
I did not offer him a chair.
“What is this?”
He looked at the document.
Then went pale.
“I don’t know.”
“You just told me about the account.”
“I knew an account existed.”
“In Noah’s name.”
“Yes.”
“Why Noah?”
His eyes filled.
“That was the name we chose.”
I hated him for remembering.
“What is it?”
“I thought Victor created it.”
“For what?”
“He told me it was a memorial investment.”
I laughed bitterly.
“You accepted financial products from Victor after everything?”
“I didn’t know everything then.”
“When did you learn?”
“Three years ago.”
Again.
The timeline of collapse.
We traced the trust.
Money had flowed through it.
Clinical payments.
Insurance reimbursements.
Pharmaceutical licensing.
Millions.
A dead child used as a shell.
That was the first time Richard looked truly sick.
“I didn’t know.”
I believed him.
Because no one could fake that kind of horror.
Then Evelyn found something stranger.
The trust had a legal guardian designation.
Not Richard.
Not me.
My mother.
I called her.
She did not answer.
We drove to her hotel.
Gone.
No sign of struggle.
Just one note.
I had to finish what George started.
My stomach dropped.
My mother had disappeared willingly.
Again, family secrets moved faster than healing.
Then federal agents located her vehicle.
At an abandoned research campus owned by Victor’s trust.
We arrived with warrants.
Mom stood inside a server room.
Uploading files.
“Mom.”
She turned.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“Not telling you about Noah.”
My throat tightened.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“What is the trust?”
“Your father’s trap.”
I stared.
“Dad created it?”
“After your miscarriage.”
My anger flared.
“Why use my dead baby?”
“He didn’t.”
She started crying.
“The trust existed before.”
“What?”
“Noah was a code name.”
I went still.
“For what?”
“Neutralization of Human Adaptive Opioid Response.”
N.H.A.O.R.
NOAH.
My father’s antidote program.
The dates had been changed later to mimic our miscarriage.
By Victor.
To make it look personal.
To hide the scientific archive inside estate law.
My mother continued:
“George used the NOAH trust to finance antidote research.”
“And Victor hijacked it.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To move money without scrutiny.”
I looked around.
“What are you uploading?”
“Every formula George created.”
“To who?”
“Federal medical regulators. universities. independent researchers.”
My father’s work.
Open source.
Impossible for Victor to own.
Good.
Then alarms sounded.
Mom looked at the screen.
“What?”
Another user had entered the system remotely.
Victor.
From federal detention.
Impossible.
Unless someone outside helped him.
Evelyn checked.
The remote credentials belonged to Richard.
I turned.
Richard looked horrified.
“No.”
Then another login appeared.
Alexis Royce.
She was standing beside us.
Her face went white.
“I didn’t do that.”
Someone had cloned both their identities.
A third credential appeared.
Mine.
Then the system began deleting files.
My signature flashed on the authorization screen.
Again.
May you like
Someone was using me to destroy my father’s work.
And the access point came from Whitmore Logistics headquarters.
