Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Empire

Six months later.

The federal trial of United States v. Alexander Simmons and Josephine Simmons lasted precisely eleven days in the federal courthouse downtown.

The prosecution’s case was insurmountable. The combination of my forensic accounting ledgers, the intercepted digital communications, the smart-home audio recordings, and the devastating eyewitness testimony provided by Bianca Frost and former bank employees shattered every defense attempt made by their new legal team.

On a cold morning in late January, the jury returned after less than two hours of deliberation.

Guilty on all counts.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, dressed in a sharp charcoal blazer, holding six-month-old Helen on my lap. Beside me sat my older brother, David, who had flown in from Chicago, his hand resting supportively on my shoulder.

Across the room, at the defense table, Alexander looked entirely unrecognizable.

The polished, arrogant real estate tycoon had vanished. His dark suit hung loosely on his emaciated frame. His hair was messy and graying at the temples. His eyes were hollow, sunken, filled with the crushing, desperate reality of a man who had lost everything he had spent his life trying to manipulate.

Beside him, Josephine sat slumped in her chair, her regal posture entirely gone, looking like a frail, defeated old woman.

Federal Judge Robert Vance stood behind the bench, reading the formal sentencing order.

"Alexander Simmons," Judge Vance declared, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "For your leadership role in a multi-million-dollar financial fraud scheme, corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit illegal confinement and evidence tampering, I sentence you to eighteen years in federal custody at the Pekin Federal Correctional Institution, without the possibility of parole."

Alexander let out a choked, ragged sob, collapsing forward against the defense table.

"Josephine Simmons," Judge Vance continued, turning his gaze toward the matriarch. "For your direct participation in wire fraud, bank fraud, and corporate extortion, I sentence you to twelve years in federal custody."

The judge slammed his gavel down. CLANG.

Court marshals stepped forward immediately, taking hold of the heavy chains attached to Alexander’s waist.

As Alexander was pulled toward the rear holding cell doors, he turned his head violently, searching the gallery until his hollow, bloodshot eyes locked onto mine.

"Karina!" he cried out, his voice cracking with desperate, pathetic grief. "Karina, please! Don't leave me in here! I'm sorry! I'm so sorry!"

I didn't shout. I didn't smile. I didn't show anger.

I simply lifted my hand, rested my palm over Helen’s small cheek, and looked at him with the quiet, unshakeable serenity of a woman who had completely reclaimed her life.

Alexander was dragged through the heavy steel door, his desperate screams echoing down the hallway until the lock clicked shut with a final, definitive THUD.

The Simmons dynasty had officially ceased to exist.
