Chapter 11 - THE FIFTY-MILLION-DOLLAR OFFER BECAME EVIDENCE

Garrett withdrew his marital-property claim the next morning.

Too late.

My divorce attorney had already requested financial discovery.

The fifty-million-dollar settlement he called generous now looked very different.

Not generous.

Strategic.

He had wanted me to accept cash quickly before I saw the rest.

The first hidden asset surfaced within forty-eight hours.

A brokerage account containing $14.2 million.

Then a Wyoming holding company.

Then two undeclared private investments.

Then a yacht share Garrett once told me belonged to a client.

The larger problem wasn’t marital greed.

It was tracing.

Some accounts contained money transferred from Briar Holdings.

Briar had received corporate funds.

Corporate funds had entered personal assets.

Garrett’s divorce had become tied to the forensic corporate investigation.

He had built a maze and trapped himself inside it.

Bianca cooperated fully.

Harlan resigned after turning over his documents.

He also agreed to surrender the warrants Garrett had promised him.

Samuel publicly apologized to me for signing the false resignation resolution without calling me first.

I accepted the apology.

Not because it fixed anything.

Because unlike Garrett, Samuel understood that an apology did not require immediate restoration of trust.

The board hired a temporary chief restructuring officer.

Her name was Dana Cho.

Fifty-one.

Former aerospace executive.

No interest in anyone’s ego.

I liked her within ten minutes.

On her second day, Dana walked into the boardroom carrying three binders.

“We can save West Atlantic.”

Martin sat forward.

“How?”

“The subsidiary isn’t operationally weak. It’s overleveraged because cash was moved elsewhere.”

Exactly.

Garrett had created the crisis he planned to exploit.

Northbridge agreed to refinance part of the debt.

Not because I ordered it.

Because the numbers justified it.

That distinction mattered to me now.

We brought in another lender too.

I would never again let West survive because one woman quietly kept catching it.

Strong companies needed systems.

Not secret rescuers.

Three weeks later, Blue Horizon officially returned to active status.

Christopher came to Baltimore for the announcement.

No champagne.

No victory speech.

We gathered department heads and told them the truth.

Governance failures had occurred.

An investigation was underway.

Jobs were being protected.

Leadership was changing.

Nobody applauded at first.

Then one warehouse manager did.

Others followed.

I nearly cried.

Garrett had believed power came from controlling the room.

I discovered something different.

Sometimes power was telling a room the truth when lying would be easier.

That evening, Caroline called.

“We found the final Meridian draft.”

“What now?”

“It isn’t just Blue Horizon.”

Garrett planned to transfer three other West projects into Meridian after my dilution.

Nearly forty percent of West’s projected five-year growth.

He had intended to leave shareholders with a weakened public company while he privately owned its future.

Then she sent me the document.

At the bottom was Garrett’s signature.

Below his was Robert Vale’s.

And beneath both...

Bianca Drake.

I stared at it.

She had told me she knew nothing about the broader Meridian plan.

Her signature said otherwise.

The next morning, I placed the document in front of her.

Bianca went completely pale.

“That isn’t my signature.”

I looked at her.

“Then we have another problem.”

Her attorney examined it.

Then asked for the original metadata.

Twenty minutes later, he found it.

The signature image had been copied from Bianca’s employment agreement.

Garrett had forged her consent too.

But the metadata revealed who assembled the document.

Not Garrett.

His personal attorney.

The same attorney advising him in our divorce.

And if that lawyer knowingly helped fabricate signatures...

Garrett’s problems were about to become much bigger than losing a company.
