Chapter 11 - THE COMPANY WAS HANDED TO ME

By sunrise, Manhattan looked deceptively peaceful.

Inside Harrington headquarters, war had already begun.

Nine board members sat around the forty-sixth-floor conference table.

Charles stood near the windows.

Vivien sat at the opposite end.

Her expensive necklace was gone.

So was her arrogance.

I entered with Carter and Richard.

Every conversation stopped.

Nathaniel had been correct about one thing.

Northstar’s accounts still held the missing money.

Every dollar.

The alleged theft had actually been an unauthorized asset shelter.

Still illegal.

Still fraud.

But the money had not disappeared.

And three hours earlier, Vivien had transferred her entire ownership interest in Northstar to me.

I looked at her.

“Why?”

Her eyes were swollen from crying.

“Because Nathaniel told me to.”

“You take orders from him?”

“No.”

She looked at Carter.

“I took orders from Carter.”

He stiffened.

Vivien continued.

“Carter told me months ago he wanted to build his own investment platform. He said his father controlled everything. He said Northstar would become independent once he secured enough capital.”

I looked at him.

“Using company funds.”

“I thought I had board authority.”

“You didn’t.”

“I know that now.”

Vivien laughed bitterly.

“He promised me we would run it together.”

Carter looked ashamed.

“And you believed him.”

“Yes.”

Her eyes met mine.

“I also believed he was leaving you.”

That hurt less than I expected.

Maybe because humiliation loses its power when the truth becomes ordinary.

Carter looked at me.

“I told her that.”

“I know.”

“No. Serena, I need you to hear me say it. I lied to her too.”

Vivien flinched.

He continued.

“I wanted everything without giving up anything.”

For once, that was honest.

The board chairman interrupted.

“This family drama is not our priority.”

I turned.

“What is?”

“A hostile acquisition offer.”

“From whom?”

He slid a document across the table.

Vale Meridian Capital.

My breath caught.

Vale.

Thomas Vale’s family name.

Richard read the document.

“They’re offering six point four billion dollars.”

Charles looked furious.

“They’ve been buying our debt for months.”

The chairman nodded.

“If the Sterling Trust’s withdrawal remains effective, we cannot satisfy liquidity requirements. Unless new capital is injected, the sale becomes necessary.”

Everyone looked at me.

I understood.

They wanted my two billion back.

Charles stepped forward.

“Serena—”

“No.”

He stopped.

“I’m not restoring the funds under the old structure.”

The chairman frowned.

“Then Harrington Global may cease to exist.”

“Maybe Harrington Global should cease to exist.”

Carter looked at me.

I continued.

“But the employees shouldn’t pay for what this family did.”

I placed a folder on the table.

“My attorneys prepared a recapitalization proposal.”

Charles stared.

“When?”

“Before the gala.”

Carter almost smiled.

“You really planned everything.”

“I planned for possibilities.”

I opened the folder.

“The Sterling Trust will return two billion dollars.”

Charles exhaled.

“Under conditions.”

Of course.

“Charles resigns as chairman. Carter resigns as CEO. The audit committee becomes fully independent. All disputed transactions are disclosed. Employee pension funds receive priority protection.”

The chairman leaned forward.

“And who becomes CEO?”

“I’m not interested.”

Carter looked surprised.

“Then who?”

I turned toward Evelyn Shaw.

She froze.

“You.”

The room erupted.

Evelyn stared at me.

“Serena—”

“You found the fraud. You tried to report it. You refused to protect powerful people.”

The board began whispering.

Then the chairman received an email.

His expression changed.

“What?”

He looked at me.

“Vale Meridian just withdrew its acquisition offer.”

Everyone stared.

“Why?” Charles asked.

The chairman turned the laptop around.

One sentence appeared on-screen.

WE DO NOT BID AGAINST THE RIGHTFUL OWNER.

Below it was signed:

Alexander Vale.

Thomas Vale’s son.

May you like

And attached was a private message addressed only to me.

Serena, before you return one dollar to Harrington Global, ask Charles what happened to Rebecca Sterling.
