Chapter 10 - HIS REAL EMERGENCY FUND

The hidden account changed the negotiation.
David could repay his parents.
Not instantly without tax consequences.
But realistically.
He could cover his own housing.
His own legal fees.
His own debt.
The story that he had “no choice” disappeared.
Then Rachel found a note inside his financial planning folder.
PERSONAL RESERVE — DO NOT TOUCH.
$400K MINIMUM.
Apparently David believed in emergency funds.
Just not for anyone else.
I confronted him during mediation.
“You had almost half a million dollars.”
He looked away.
“That was my security.”
“And what were the rest of us?”
Silence.
“Your parents gave you retirement money.”
“I was going to repay them.”
“With mine?”
“No.”
“Then whose?”
He had no answer.
Then I asked:
“Why four years?”
That question had bothered me.
Why not one year?
Why not indefinite?
Why choose exactly four?
David finally explained.
Vance-Cole had a four-year investment horizon.
He believed the fund would grow enough by then to repay everyone, rebuild his savings, and return wealthy.
“So Tokyo was the cover period.”
“Yes.”
“And after four years?”
“I thought…”
He stopped.
“Say it.”
“I thought you’d have adapted.”
I almost laughed.
“To your parents?”
“To being independent.”
I stared.
“You planned to abandon me with your parents so I could become more independent?”
He winced.
Wrong word.
Then:
“I thought distance would make divorce easier.”
There it was.
He did not want confrontation.
He wanted time to perform emotional demolition remotely.
FaceTime less.
Calls shorter.
Work busier.
Eventually:
We’ve changed.
Then file.
Meanwhile I would be tied to his parents’ care and less likely to investigate the money.
A coward’s divorce.
Then David said:
“I never meant to leave them forever.”
Teresa was sitting behind him.
She stood.
“No.”
Everyone turned.
“You meant to leave them with Eleanor.”
She pointed to herself and Walter.
“As luggage.”
David’s face collapsed.
Teresa continued:
“You made me believe she wanted us. You made her believe we expected service. You made your father give you money. You nearly took more.”
Her voice broke.
“I spent years telling Eleanor what a wife should do while my son was teaching everyone what a husband should never do.”
The room went silent.
Then Teresa removed a key from her purse.
David’s apartment key.
She placed it on the table.
May you like
“I’m done rescuing you.”
That was the moment David finally looked afraid.
