Chapter 6 - MY LAWYER WAS VICTOR’S DAUGHTER

“No.”

I said it before anyone else.

Grace’s face had drained.

Diane stared.

Then looked away.

“Her name was Grace Catherine Hale.”

My attorney’s full name:

Grace Catherine Mercer.

I knew she used her stepfather’s surname.

I never asked why.

Grace stood so abruptly her chair hit the wall.

“My mother is Catherine Hale.”

Silence.

Catherine.

Victor’s first wife.

My lawyer was Victor’s daughter.

She had represented me through months of divorce without telling me.

My entire body went cold.

“You knew?”

Grace looked horrified.

“No.”

“Your mother never told you?”

“She told me my father died before I was born.”

Of course.

Another fake death.

This time not Victor’s.

An invented father.

Grace called Catherine.

Speaker.

“Mom.”

Catherine heard her voice and immediately knew.

“What happened?”

“Is Victor my father?”

Silence.

Grace closed her eyes.

“Mom.”

“Yes.”

The word shattered the room.

Grace started crying.

I stood but did not touch her.

This was hers.

“Why?”

Catherine explained.

When she left Victor, she was pregnant.

Victor wanted custody.

Not because he wanted a child.

Because his mother’s trust favored descendants.

Catherine feared he would use the baby.

She told him she miscarried.

Moved.

Later married Daniel Mercer, who adopted Grace.

Victor eventually discovered truth.

When Grace was six.

He threatened.

Catherine negotiated.

Victor agreed not to assert paternity if Catherine stayed silent about the café fire and financial fraud.

Everything exchanged for silence.

Grace whispered:

“You let me believe another man was my biological father.”

“Daniel was your father.”

Emotionally, yes.

But truth withheld.

“Did Victor know I became a lawyer?”

“Yes.”

“Did he know I represented Evelyn?”

Catherine stopped.

“Probably.”

Grace stared at me.

I understood before she said it.

Victor may have allowed or encouraged Grace to become my attorney.

Why?

Conflict.

If biological relationship surfaced, he could try to disqualify her.

Disrupt case.

Maybe invalidate strategy.

Grace immediately contacted ethics counsel.

She disclosed.

Would representation continue?

Probably not.

At least temporarily.

I felt abandoned all over again.

Not by Grace.

By Victor’s reach.

My new attorney took over.

Grace remained witness.

Then Victor filed emergency motion.

Exactly as expected.

He claimed conflict.

Misconduct.

Conspiracy between ex-wife and secret daughter.

The judge looked disgusted.

“Mr. Hale, did you know Ms. Mercer was your biological daughter before retaining your current counsel?”

Victor’s attorney whispered.

Victor said:

“I suspected.”

The judge:

“Did you disclose that?”

“No.”

“So you allowed her to represent your wife while knowing a potential conflict existed, and now seek advantage from the nondisclosure?”

Victor’s smile disappeared.

Motion denied for immediate sanctions? The court allowed new counsel transition but preserved prior work.

Victor’s trap failed.

Then Grace testified.

Her DNA confirmed paternity.

Victor had another hidden child.

Why did that matter financially?

Because Eleanor Hale Family Trust’s first descendant provisions.

Grace was older than Lucas.

She had priority claim to certain Hale family assets Victor had transferred to Lucas trust.

Victor knew.

He hid Grace because acknowledging her reduced his control.

He had spent decades pretending he had no daughter to manipulate inheritance.

Then Grace discovered something inside Catherine’s old divorce records.

Victor signed a paternity acknowledgment twenty-two years earlier.

So he knew from birth.

Later documents claiming no children were false.

Loan applications.

Insurance.

Trust filings.

More fraud.

Then Grace said:

“There’s one more problem.”

“What?”

“My grandmother’s trust.”

Eleanor Hale left not only descendant rights.

She left restaurant-related property.

A building.

The original location where Victor and Melissa planned Hale & Hale.

Victor always told me we leased our first location before buying another.

Actually, Eleanor owned the building.

After Melissa’s “death,” Victor inherited temporary management.

But beneficial ownership should have split between Victor and Melissa’s descendants? Melissa had daughter Claire.

Also Grace.

Trust language required equal distribution among grandchildren.

Victor diverted rental income.

Again.

Then Claire Cole surfaced.

Twenty.

Victor’s niece.

Melissa Hale’s daughter.

She had known uncle existed but not full story.

She appeared with mother.

Melissa Hale finally came forward publicly.

Court hallway stopped when Victor saw her.

His supposedly dead sister.

Alive.

He whispered:

“Melissa.”

She looked at him.

“You should’ve left Evelyn alone.”

Not hello.

No hug.

She entered courtroom.

Testified.

Victor stole her inheritance.

Faked her death identity after accident.

Paid her silence.

Then stole from Evelyn.

Then tried moving MAH trust assets intended partly for Claire.

Victor’s story collapsed under women he had erased.

His first wife.

His sister.

His second wife.

His daughter.

His niece.

All in one case.

Then prosecutor? Divorce court can refer matters. State financial crimes opened investigation.

Victor still smiled outside court.

Reporters gathered.

He said:

“This is a coordinated attack by bitter women.”

That quote went viral.

Worst possible strategy.

Former employees began contacting Grace’s firm.

More stories.

Unpaid overtime.

Off-books payroll.

Injuries.

Tip skimming.

Tax manipulation.

The restaurant empire began facing class claims.

Victor’s self-made reputation cracked.

Then the receiver found a final hidden account.

$6.4 million.

Not in Victor’s name.

Not Melissa’s.

Not Lucas.

Not Grace.

Account owner:

Evelyn Hale Irrevocable Trust.

I stared.

“I never created this.”

Trust date:

Twenty years earlier.

Week before our wedding.

Settlor:

Victor Hale.

Beneficiary:

Evelyn Hale.

Why would Victor secretly create a trust for me?

Then document showed funding source:

$350,000.

Exact amount close to Melissa Hale’s stolen inheritance.

My stomach turned.

Victor had placed stolen family money into a trust using my name before we married.

Why?

If theft discovered, it looked like I held proceeds.

He had built me as his financial shield from the beginning.

Then the trust received millions over years.

Potentially stolen or hidden money.

On paper, beneficiary me.

Could prosecutors accuse me?

Maybe.

May you like

That was the point.

Victor had spent twenty years building a version of the finances where every crime could eventually point toward his “pack mule.”
